A vibrant and culture-rich port city

Fly to Amsterdam with British Airways and find out why the city is known as ‘The Venice of the North’.

Over 60 miles of waterways run through the capital, offering a unique way to experience the atmospheric streets and get a glimpse of the vibrant and diverse districts.

Of course, the broader brush strokes of any itinerary should feature plenty of gallery hopping. Marvel at Rembrandt’s masterpiece The Night Watch in the Rijksmuseum, before moving on to the other big-hitter, the Van Gogh Museum.

Once you’ve got a taste for the past, pop into one of the city’s many ‘brown cafes’ – traditional wood-panelled, smoke-stained drinking spots. Book your holiday to Amsterdam now.

Amsterdam flight FAQs

Your flight time to Amsterdam depends on where you’re flying from and which airport you’re landing in. A journey from New York to Amsterdam will take just under ten hours including a connection in London, while Los Angeles to Amsterdam takes just over 13 hours with a connection.

Amsterdam’s peak season starts in April, when the tulips are in bloom, and runs until the end of August. Travel outside of the spring and summer months to find the best deals on flights.

Amsterdam is a destination that caters to all budgets. If you’re looking to cut the cost of a city break, consider travelling on Sunday – accommodation is typically cheaper during the first few days of the week.

The Dutch capital is also famously flat, meaning cycling is an easy and cost-effective way to get around. Because of its compact size too, walking is a wonderful – and free – way to explore all the central attractions.

The Vondelpark Open Air Theatre hosts free summertime performances, while the National Opera and Ballet opens its doors for free lunchtime concerts most Tuesdays between September and May.

Amsterdam is one of the most bicycle-friendly cities in the world, and famously has more pedal bikes than cars. Around 400km of cycle paths make it easy and safe to move around on two wheels, and there are plenty of inexpensive places to rent them. The city’s frequent and reliable tram network serves the central areas and surrounding neighbourhoods.

You can also hire a car with British Airways if you want to get out of Amsterdam and see more of what the surrounding area has to offer. You’ll receive great benefits, with all mandatory charges included and 24-hour customer support, plus you’ll collect Avios points on every rental.

Just a short hop from the UK, Amsterdam is a perfect year-round destination.

Visit in the summer and you’ll be able to enjoy all the outdoor activities on offer, including parks, urban forests and the famous Albert Cuyp Market. Located in the lively de Pijp district, it’s Europe’s biggest market, with almost 300 stalls selling clothes, food and flowers.

Visit in winter and take bracing bike rides alongside the Amstel River and some of the city’s 165 canals. Dive in and out of the cosy cafes and immerse yourself in an abundance of Dutch art in the many museums and exhibitions.
