Kenya is synonymous with safari. In fact, the word ‘safari’ is an English translation of a phrase in Swahili, Kenya’s national language. Once you land in Nairobi, you’re at the perfect starting point for exploring game reserves and spotting members of the Big Five. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many – but these adventures are just the beginning of what Kenya’s capital has to offer.
Fly to Nairobi with British Airways and discover a modern African city, with its fair share of glossy skyscrapers and a nightlife scene featuring everything from Champagne bars to art centres. During the day you can learn about Nairobi’s history, arts, culture and nature at the National Museum, or go hiking – and zip lining – in the Ngongo Hills. When you’re hungry, discover restaurants like Carnivore, which serves up almost every kind of game meat you can imagine. Plus, start your day with a cup of freshly brewed beans at a Nairobi coffee shop. Book your flight to Nairobi now.
A flight to Nairobi from London takes eight hours and 35 minutes.
Nairobi gets the majority of its visitors during the dry season. There are fewer mosquitos and the plains aren’t as lush, which makes it easier to see the wildlife. This period also experiences the most sunshine – but this combination makes June to October the most expensive time to visit. So, it’s cheapest to fly to Nairobi during the wet season in spring, but the heavy rainfall can mean the roads are flooded and some of the attractions are closed. Check out our low fare finder to find the best prices all year round.
Nairobi is an affordable destination, even if you’re travelling on a small budget. There are plenty of options at mealtimes, with street food stalls and independent restaurants throughout the city. You’ve got your pick of accommodation choices at a range of price points too, and you can take a free walking tour to find your way around the streets. Entrance to attractions is also usually cheap, and includes must-visit locations like conservation areas and museums.
When you’re travelling to Nairobi from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport you can take a taxi that will reach the city in about 40 minutes, depending on traffic. You can also pre-book a car before you arrive. Or, there are buses from the airport to the downtown area, but this journey will take longer as there are lots of stops along the way. You can also hire a car with British Airways if you want to explore more of Nairobi and beyond. You’ll receive great benefits, with all mandatory charges included and 24-hour customer support, plus you’ll collect Avios points on every rental.
There’s so much more to Nairobi than just incredible wildlife experiences. Visit the Bombas of Kenya to learn more about Kenya’s cultures, and take a stroll through Uhuru Gardens Memorial Park. While enjoying the city’s natural space, look for the inspirational Independence Monument. Keep an eye out for one of the city’s many Maasai markets on your adventures too, where you can buy a range of items, including jewellery, clothes and paintings. When you’re ready to venture out to see lions, elephants and more, there’s a huge choice of tour operators to choose from, so you can find the perfect experience for you.
