New York flight FAQs

There are over 70 direct British Airways flights to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport each week, taking off from London Heathrow and London Gatwick.

A flight from London to New York takes around 8 hours.

January to March is often a good time to travel if you’re looking for cheaper flights, as temperatures are low at this time of year and the holiday season festivities have ended. It’s a great time to see the city lights twinkling in snow and experience the tourist attractions with fewer crowds. You can use our low fare finder to find the cheapest time to fly to New York.

There’s a reason to visit New York in every season. In winter you can enjoy festive decorations, towering Christmas trees and see the iconic ball drop in Times Square on December 31. Summer, meanwhile, welcomes outdoor film screenings, festivals, and warm weather for ticking off all of the city’s famous locations. Spring and autumn are all about foilage – growing and falling – and experiencing the seasons you’ve seen captured on film for yourself.

As one of the world’s biggest cities, trips to the Empire State Building can be expensive. However, you’ll find everything from restaurants to hotels at a range of price points, which can help you stick to a budget.

Costs in the central tourist areas are more expensive, so avoid those near to the main attractions for meals or drinks. You’ll have to pay to visit most of the big-name museums and skyscrapers, but there are passes available that will help you save money by providing entry to the must-see sights for one combined price.

And hop on the subway to get around – it’s the same low fare for each ride.

If you’re landing in Newark, the cheapest and quickest way to get to the city centre is by train. The journey to Penn Station takes around 30 minutes, plus a 10-minute connection via AirTrain from your terminal.

If you’re travelling from JFK, you can ride the subway into the city. The Long Island Rail Road offers a faster train journey but will cost slightly more.

Once you arrive, the New York subway system offers a great way to get around the city. It runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

You can also hire a car with British Airways if you want to get out of New York and see more of what the surrounding area has to offer. You’ll receive great benefits, with all mandatory charges included and 24-hour customer support, plus you’ll collect Avios points on every rental.

As well as being an epic city break destination, New York is also a perfect place from which to begin – or end – a multi-destination holiday.

Boston is four hours' drive north, and Philadelphia two hours south. You could swap the cultural capital for the political one, and fly to Washington DC, or take a trip to the west coast and visit San Francisco, before embarking on a road trip to Las Vegas.

You can book a hand baggage-only ticket or make the most of our generous baggage allowance. If you choose economy standard or one of our British Airways Holidays’ packages, each passenger can check in a bag weighing up to 23kg – in addition to a handbag, laptop case or other small bag. Families travelling in any cabin with younger children can also check in one car seat and one fully collapsible pushchair. Read more about baggage allowances for children.

If you’re flying in our business cabin, you can check in two bags weighing up to 32kg each. Read our baggage guide for full details.

Citizens of the UK and Ireland and EU passport holders do not need a visa to visit the USA. However, you will need an ESTA, which permits travel to the US for 90 days or less. If you hold a passport from a country or territory outside of the listed areas, you may need to apply for a visa before you travel. You can find out more about visa requirements for all the countries we fly to at the IATA Travel Centre.

Discover outstanding service from the moment you book. Fly with just hand baggage and you can carry two bags free of charge. Choose our checked baggage option and you can travel with hand baggage and a 23kg bag checked into the hold, plus enjoy free seat selection 24 hours before you fly. On board you’ll find HEPA-filtered air, quality on-board catering, and a warm, uniquely British welcome.

Simply relax and let us take care of you, every step of the way.
