Arrivo al JFK

UK passport holders are entitled to enter New York under the Visa Waiver Programme, however must have gained authorisation under ESTA. Passengers will be given a landing card during the flight, to make your journey as smooth as possible. On arrival in New York, tipping is prevalent. It is very important to the New York economy. Bar servers, bellhops, and concierges will expect a small gratuity for their services. But you don't have to tip wildly, $1 or $2 is often enough. In a restaurant or for room service, consider tipping 15 to 20 per cent of the bill instead.

Viaggiare verso New York e spostarsi al suo interno

Getting around the Big Apple couldn’t be easier. Hail a taxi from the airport – a typical taxi fare from JFK to central Manhattan is around $55 including tolls and tip. Alternatively, you could book a transfer before you arrive to make it even easier. Why not arrive in style by booking a limousine from the airport? Or save some money by sharing a shuttle transfer. Getting around New York City is simple, as there is a grid system of numbered streets and named avenues. You can choose from buses, taxis, trains and the famous subway.

Places per eat around the world (in New York)

Everybody knows you can get any type of food in New York. From bagels and brunch to pizza and soul food, these are among the best places to go in NYC. Spread throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn, don’t miss out on these culinary pleasures.

compressomostraAbsolute Bagels

Best for: Deep-filled bagels.

Voted the best bagels in New York by Time Out, we tend to agree. These chewy, delicious, hand-rolled boiled delicacies come with a great selection of schmears (creamy cheese spreads). Our recommendation is the scallion schmear with lox (smoked salmon) and cucumber, a true New Yorker’s bagel. Journey up to the Upper West Side on Broadway to sample these bagels, close to Columbia University. A student-staple, you will not be disappointed. As there is no seating inside, maybe sit in the nearby Riverside Park for a mini-picnic.

compressomostraBurger Joint

Best for: Burgers, obviously.

Supposedly secret – but often with queues – this quirky, 70s-inspired hole in the wall is inside the exclusive Le Parker Meridien. Behind a red curtain, down a corridor with a lively neon-burger, diners sit in a small room strewn with graffiti eating some of the best burgers in Manhattan. Juicy, char-grilled beef patties with a liberal amount of cheese, salad, and pickles all in a grilled bun. Crispy fries and thick milkshakes complete the experience. This is a cash-only joint, in keeping with the grungy theme, so visit a cash point before you arrive.

compressomostraFriend of a Farmer

Best for: Weekend brunch.

Brunch in New York can be the most important meal of the weekend. With that in mind, head over to local favourite Friend of a Farmer in Gramercy Park for a superb hangover cure. Choose from farm-fresh, home-made dishes that will remind you of your grandmother’s cooking. From superb omelettes with spinach and mushrooms to crab eggs benedict, you will find something you want. The griddle specialities are especially appealing, as are the Bloody Marys. A small warning – get there early as it gets busy, which is always a good sign.

Best for: Ramen and noodles.

A subtle nod to the Japanese inventor of dried noodles, Momufuku Indo, David Chang’s somewhat-Americanised version of Korean specialities is fantastic, making it well worth a visit. Momofuku isn’t the most traditional of noodle bars, but this is New York and innovation is part of the furniture. Choose from different Ramen dishes and steamed buns (pork, chicken, shrimp or veg) from the short but delicious menu. Highly recommended is the Fried Chicken Dinner, which comes with two whole chickens, vegetables and pancakes.

compressomostraLa Sirène

Best for: French fare.

Unlike a lot of New York’s high-end French bistros, La Sirène is a casual affair. They still serve some of the finest gastronomy in Manhattan. Bring your own wine – for a reasonable corking fee – and eat outstanding food. Think subtle and delicious escargots, tender rabbit stew, finished off with profiteroles. The atmosphere is of a relaxed, intimate and traditional Provençal bistro, albeit in the heart of Soho. If you are looking to avoid the pretentious restaurants of Midtown, then this is for you. Hear the siren’s song.

Best for: New York’s original pizza.

Known as the first pizzeria in the US, Lombardi’s first opened its doors in 1905. Gennaro Lombardi, a Neapolitan immigrant, reinvented a humble staple dish into the massive worldwide phenomenon it is today. Smoky-based dough baked in a stone-baked oven, with his famous tomato sauce and fresh mozzarella await the eager diner. Signature toppings include Italian meatballs and pepperoni – a traditional treat. In the family since 1897, you know you are going to be well looked after when you walk through the doors.

compressomostraThe Meatball Shop

Best for: Meatballs, New York style.

Opened in 2010, this Lower East Side favourite was an instant success. A mix and match menu of different meatballs and sides, lathered on bread or atop fresh pasta – this is great idea. All served in a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere, these are some of the best meatballs you will ever taste. Like the ‘classic beef’ meatball with ‘classic tomato' sauce on spaghetti. The chicken pesto on a baguette is a big favourite. There are so many different ways to try them, including great veggie options, you will want to return time and again.

compressomostraNathan’s Famous

Best for: original hot dogs.

Now a world-famous brand of hot dogs, Nathan’s Famous was started in Coney Island in 1916. Using his wife’s secret blend of spices and a loan from a friend, Nathan Handwerker set up a hot dog stand and the rest is history. If you head over to Coney Island, the original shop is still there serving customers every day. The classic beef frankfurter is great with onions, ketchup and mustard – a winning combination which brings people back time and again. The annual hot dog eating competition takes place each July, and is now a world-famous event.

compressomostraPearl Oyster Bar

Best for: Seafood and oysters.

Pearl Oyster Bar supplies some of the finest oysters and delicious New England recipes to its knowledgeable fan base. Based on Maine’s humble lobster and beach food shacks, your taste buds will feel like you are beside the seaside. Sit in intimate company to sample some of the finest lobster rolls, fried oysters and clam chowder in this Greenwich Village favourite. They also have a fantastic wine list to accompany their delicious fish and seafood specialities. A word of warning, they don’t take bookings, so be ready to queue.

Best for: Soul food and BBQ.

The best reason to visit Harlem’s Malcolm X Boulevard is Sylvia’s, who has been serving southern-style cuisine since 1962. A neighbourhood favourite, anyone you ask recommends Sylvia’s for its food and its homely atmosphere. Succulent fried chicken, Carolina-style catfish, waffles, and much more will delight first-timers. Our recommendation is the BBQ Ribs, glazed in a honeyed, spiced sauce – the meat just falls off the bone. This is a place where comfort comes foremost, so expect delicious food, friendly service and huge portions.
