A San Francisco holiday is a treat for all the senses. Built around seven hills leading down to the bay, the beautiful city below can be seen by climbing the city’s steep streets. San Francisco is a city of architectural icons – think wide roads flanked by elegant Victorian and Edwardian houses, known as the ‘painted ladies’, and of course the Golden Gate Bridge. But that’s just one side of San Francisco. A global leader in the tech industry, the glittering skyscrapers cement this city’s position as winner of Bloomberg’s top-ranking city in the USA.
It’s no surprise that 40 per cent of visitors to San Francisco cite the foodie scene as their number one reason to visit the city. With more than 3,400 restaurants, food lovers will be in heaven here as offerings range from Italian and Japanese, to Michelin-starred fine dining and coffee shops serving local favourites.
Finding a bad view of San Francisco is almost impossible, making sightseeing its easiest activity. Look out over Alamo Square, take in the red colossus of the Golden Gate Bridge or enjoy the view of the city from Alcatraz Island – worth a visit in itself. Or hire a car and explore San Francisco’s surrounds, including the beautiful Napa Valley, the picture-perfect scenery of Monterey, or the artsy student-filled town of Berkeley.
