What to do in Tenerife
Relax on Tenerife’s beaches
As well as being home to sandy golden stretches, Tenerife also has natural volcanic beaches made of black sand. Head to Playa de Las Teresitas and Playa de las Américas for a traditional beach, or Playa Jardin for one of the island’s more unique spots.
Explore Mount Teide and volcanic landscapes
Marvel at the volcanic landscape on Mount Teide, where lava fields, hiking trails and photo-ready vistas are all on tap.
Discover Tenerife’s resorts and towns
Popular areas like Costa Adeje offer modern resorts and beachfront hotels, while smaller towns and coastal villages provide a more relaxed and traditional atmosphere.
Enjoy outdoor activities and nature
Tenerife is ideal for outdoor adventures, including hiking, whale watching and exploring the dramatic stretches of coastline, such as Los Gigantes famous cliffs, best viewed from the sea.
Tenerife has warm temperatures throughout the year, with plenty of sunshine and low rainfall compared to the rest of mainland Europe. Head north if you prefer things a bit cooler, and south to bask in warmer, drier weather. Make sure to bring a jacket for Mount Teide as it can get a bit chilly, and plenty of sun cream for the toasty coastal areas.
March to May
Spring in Tenerife sees sunshine and temperatures in the high teens and early 20s. It might still be a bit chilly for a dip in the sea, but it’s a great time to explore the island’s attractions without the crowds.
June to August
The island basks in the sun during the summer months, making it perfect for a fly-and-flop getaway.
December to February
Tenerife’s winter weather is still very pleasant but make sure to bring a jacket for the cooler evenings.
Tenerife flight FAQs
Tenerife is an affordable destination at any time of the year, but particularly if you travel outside the peak months of July and August. For the best deals on accommodation, look beyond the more popular resorts of Los Cristianos and the upscale hotels of Costa Adeje.
The island has many self-catering apartments, which are an excellent choice if you’re travelling with a group. Opt for a hostel to cut costs further or pitch a tent in one of Tenerife’s many official campsites.
For a truly wallet-friendly experience, have lunch at a guachinche – pop-up restaurants that appear in the garages and back gardens of local families, which typically serve simple, traditional dishes. The best place to find seasonal guachines is in the northern, wine-growing region of the island.
Tenerife South airport is a 15-minute drive from the Playa de las Americas resort and the neighbouring Costa Adeje. It takes around 45 minutes to reach the capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife in a taxi. Visitors can also pre-book an airport transfer through their resort.
Buses link the airport to Santa Cruz and Costa Adeje and run through the night. They also serve the main areas and attractions.
Tenerife also has bike routes that run all over the island, including Teide National Park. It’s easy to rent bicycles and mountain bikes from all the main towns and resorts.
You can also hire a car with British Airways if you want to see more of what Tenerife has to offer. You’ll receive great benefits, with all mandatory charges included and 24-hour customer support, plus you’ll collect Avios points on every rental.
Known as the 'island of eternal spring' because of its perennial balmy temperatures, Tenerife is a holiday hotspot for all seasons.
- Peak season (December to April), Tenerife enjoys sunshine during every month of the year, so it's a great spot for some winter sun.
- Shoulder season (May to June and September to October), the weather is pleasantly warm, but as it’s outside of the peak season, you won’t have to share the beach with big crowds.
- Summer (July to August) is the best time of year to visit for guaranteed hot temperatures.
