French Riviera hotels we recommend

Five budget ideas for Nice

The French Riviera is seen as a luxury destination, and while this is true, there is definitely the chance to have a cheaper holiday in Nice. Spectacular beaches, affordable but delicious food and year-round sunshine makes Nice an ideal place for a brilliant budget break.

Circuits touristiques.

You cannot avoid beauty in a city like Nice, from the miles long Promenade des Anglais and the panoramic Bay of Angels to the winding yellow-hued streets of Vieux Nice (old town). Climb the steps to the stunning Colline du Château (Castle Hill) for one of the best views of the bay and old town. The Place Masséna is a pedestrianised square where many cultural events take place close by to the Jardin Albert I. The Notre-Dame de Nice Cathedral is a wonderful example of neo-Gothic design, with gilded turrets and a rose window, it could come straight out of a Victor Hugo novel. And don’t miss the free museum at the iconic Negresco Hotel on the promenade.

Nice’s reputation as expensive is unfounded if you avoid the obvious tourist traps of the promenade and beach. For breakfast, grab a croissant and coffee at one of the old town cafés – then sit and people watch. Pick up wonderful fresh produce for a picnic – like cheese and Niçoise olives at the Marche Cours Saleya, before heading to the beach for the afternoon. Traditional Provençal cuisine is hearty and filling, perfect for those heady evenings after the sunset. Venture into the old town for some surprisingly cheap bistros. A must-try is the Pissaladière, a tart with anchovies, onions and olives – much like a pizza but with a Provençal flavour.

Nice is known for luxury shopping, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find a bargain or two. Head down to the markets, in particular the Cours Saleya market, which on a Monday has vintage and antique stalls selling weird and wonderful collectibles, much like a huge open-air museum. On other days it is a regular produce market selling delicious olives, cheeses and beautiful flowers. Visit the morning fish market in Old Nice, which has been operating in the same spot for centuries. And the Saturday market at the Palais de Justice is brilliant, alternating weekly between second-hand books, arts and crafts, and vintage postcards – ideal for sending to friends.

The best place to go out in the evening is Vieux Nice, its medieval streets are the liveliest and you will find some cheap bars there too. In France, especially near the beach, it is cheaper to drink at the bar rather than a table or the terrace. Make sure to order ‘pression’ rather than ‘biere’ as you will get a cheaper beer from the tap, not a more expensive bottle. There is also a great selection of wine on offer, the house wine is normally very quaffable and surprisingly cheap. Head to the famous Cave de la Tour for some budget wine and Niçoise specialities – a local favourite in the old town.

The easiest and cheapest way to get from the airport is by bus or tram, it is only €1.50 a ticket, which you can use for 74 minutes. On arrival in Nice, most people walk or cycle, as it is a small city. You can hire bikes from various places, but the easiest way is to get one of the Vélobleu bikes. This self-service system allows you to take a bike whenever you want one, the cycle paths that criss-cross the city are superb. If you wanted to go to Monaco or Monte Carlo, then the bus is the cheapest way to get there – for only €1.50 you can see the glamorous sights of the Cote d’Azur.
