How long is the flight from London to Mauritius?

Around 12 hours. You’ll fly direct from London Gatwick (LGW) to Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU) in Mauritius. British Airways direct flights to Mauritius depart three times a week from March to November and increases to five times a week from November to March. Additional flights, via Johannesburg, South Africa, depart from London Heathrow (LHR).

How do I get from the Mauritius airport to my resort?

Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU) is located on the main port island of Mauritius. While the public buses on Mauritius are very affordable, the journey times can be especially long. For a quicker and less stressful journey to your hotel, pre-book an airport transfer before you travel. You can add the door-to-door transfer once you have booked your Mauritius flight or holiday. For more flexibility throughout your entire trip, book car hire, in partnership with Avis. Car hire will allow you to independently explore the scenic island.

Do I need a visa to travel to Mauritius?

If you have a British passport, you won’t need a visa for your Mauritius holidays. You will receive a visitor’s permit upon arrival, which is valid for 60 days. (The same is true for holders of US passports.) Remember to check your passport is in date for your period of travel.

Travelling in business (Club World) will allow you two checked bags at 32kg each, while travelling in First will afford you the luxury of checking three hold bags weighing 32kg each.

Three tips for long haul flights to Mauritius

Travelling can be tiring, so follow these three tips to make your flight to Mauritius easier:

1. Combat dehydration during a flight by drinking plenty of water, juice and soft drinks. If you avoid dehydration, you will also avoid its negative side effects like headaches, fatigue and listlessness.

2. Keep the blood flowing in your body by completing some gentle exercises in your seat during the flight. Shrug your shoulders, stretch your neck and flex your toes. Take a walk down the aisle when you can.

3. Beat jet lag by living according to your new time zone as soon as you can. Mauritius is south of the equator and four hours ahead of GMT. Use our jet lag calculator for advice from our sleep expert.

Mauritius tips

Our insider Mauritius tips will help you navigate the island like local – even if you’re exploring the island for the first time.

¿Cuándo se dan propinas?

Tipping isn’t compulsory in Mauritius. A value added tax of 15% is payable on goods and services, including hotel and restaurant bills, so extra tipping isn’t obligatory. However, if you experienced excellent service, an additional tip would be warmly welcomed as a gesture of appreciation.

Cosas gratuitas que se pueden hacer

Get your fill of culture and stunning nature in Mauritius – without spending a cent. Trek a forested mountain range in Black River Gorges National Park or relax on the island’s enchanting white sand beaches. Surfers prefer the beach in Tamarin, while Flic en Flac Beach attracts snorkelers to the lagoon’s colourful coral reef. Gain insight into local life in the Port Louis Bazaar and stroll through the nearby Chinatown.

Travel money

The Mauritian Rupee (MUR) is used on the island, but you still may want to bring your own currency on your Mauritius holidays. Some travel forums suggest exchanging a majority of your money after you arrive in Mauritius to trade at better exchange rates.

Activities in Mauritius

Although the beaches likely lured you to Mauritius, there’s more to see on the scenic island. Keep a lookout for local wildlife and summit Le Morne Brabant, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Afterwards, take it easy with a game of golf on lush greens.

Hit the beach

A beach is a beach – but in Mauritius, each offers something different. Bring children to Flic en Flac beach with the shallow, gentle water. You’ll find Mauritius’ most famous snorkelling spot just off Blue Bay Beach and kitesurfers zipping across the water at La Morne. Visit the outlying Ile aux Cerfs for another island beach experience.

How about a road trip?

To see the most of Mauritius, it is most convenient to hire a car. After all, the locals drive on the left side of the road. They also use the same road signs as the British, which makes the island very navigable. Hiring a car will afford you the most freedom and flexibility to explore the varied terrain; and it’s much faster than public transportation.
