Made up of several different neighbourhoods, each with its own distinct personality, San Diego is the USA’s eighth largest city. With its busy Downtown facing onto the Pacific, taking a cruise in the harbour offers a great view of the city. The water is a big part of life for most locals, and San Diego is celebrated for its great surfing and beautiful beaches – there are over 110 kilometres of coastline – and it has some of the finest coastal scenery in California. Head to upscale La Jolla where you’ll find excellent ocean-view restaurants, upmarket shopping and a pretty beach dotted with palm trees and tide pools – why not get active by renting an ocean kayak? For an active experience, visit Mission Beach where you’ll find volleyball on the sand, rollerbladers and skateboarders. Plus don’t miss Belmont Park – a classic beachside amusement park with a vintage-style carousel.
The maritime culture of this city looms large and there are plenty of activities to enjoy along San Diego’s shore. The USS Midway aircraft carrier was the largest in the world until 1955 and now enjoys hundreds of visitors every week. If you’ve never seen an aircraft carrier, it’s well worth a visit. Located on the Embarcadero – where you’ll also find the Maritime Museum – the amusements of the Boardwalk Pier and the Waterfront Park’s many fountains are ideal family spots.
