Fly direct from London Heathrow to Tromso with British Airways during winter, when you can experience the otherworldly magic of the polar night.
The sun dips below the horizon from late November to mid January, and the snow-covered city is bathed in a cool blue light in the afternoons. Alongside chasing the northern lights, you can go whale watching or book a guide to try cross-country skiing and sledding in the countryside.
Or stay put in the city, where you can take a dip in the icy harbour – if you’re brave enough – before warming up in the floating Pust Sauna. Then, Tromso’s city centre comes to life in the evenings. Indulge in local seafood at a harbour-side restaurant before drinks at a rooftop bar with picture-perfect views over Tromso Bridge and beyond.

Visit in December when the city twinkles with festive lights and Christmas market stalls line the streets. The city is also a cultural hotspot – and the so-called Paris of the north – thanks to its many galleries, museums and festivals that attract visitors from far and wide. Discover ancient Norse folklore and local fairy tales at Tromso’s unique Troll Museum, or learn more about the indigenous Sami culture at the Arctic University Museum of Norway.
