A Scandinavian winter wonderland

Fly direct from London Heathrow to Tromso with British Airways during winter, when you can experience the otherworldly magic of the polar night.

The sun dips below the horizon from late November to mid January, and the snow-covered city is bathed in a cool blue light in the afternoons. Alongside chasing the northern lights, you can go whale watching or book a guide to try cross-country skiing and sledding in the countryside.

Or stay put in the city, where you can take a dip in the icy harbour – if you’re brave enough – before warming up in the floating Pust Sauna. Then, Tromso’s city centre comes to life in the evenings. Indulge in local seafood at a harbour-side restaurant before drinks at a rooftop bar with picture-perfect views over Tromso Bridge and beyond.

Tromso flight FAQs

Flights from London Heathrow to Tromso Airport take around three hours and 30 minutes.

We fly to Tromso from December to March, and while prices will vary from month to month, you may find it’s cheaper to fly outside of the peak Christmas and New Year dates. Find the cheapest flights to Tromso using our low fare finder.

While prices for shopping, eating and drinking in Norway can be high, you’ll find a range of options to suit every budget. Plus, much of what draws visitors to Tromso is the incredible natural beauty, which are free to enjoy.

Head out hiking from the city centre to the Storsteinen summit for an excellent way to take in your surroundings. If you’re up for a challenge, skip the fees for the Fjellheisen cable car and climb the Sherpa staircase for far-reaching views that don’t cost a penny.

It’s also free to visit the Arctic Cathedral, a must-see landmark in the city that also has Christmas concerts over the winter.

And of course, one of the most spectacular – and priceless – sights in Tromso can be found when you look up. Ask the locals for the best spot to take in the magic of the aurora borealis.

Tromso Airport isn’t far from the city centre, so it’s a straightforward journey once you touch down in Norway. The airport express bus service runs between the airport and Tromso city centre, taking around 15 minutes. There’s also a taxi rank outside the terminal if you’d prefer to go straight to your accommodation.

Once you’re in the city, it’s a pleasant walk to most of the attractions. There are also reliable city bus routes, and you can pay cash or buy a ticket from a machine in advance. You’ll also find several taxi ranks around the city centre.

You can also hire a car with British Airways if you want to see more of what Norway has to offer. You’ll receive great benefits, with all mandatory charges included and 24-hour customer support, plus you’ll collect Avios points on every rental.

Tromso is a charming city to visit at any time of year, but it comes into its own in the lead up to Christmas. Visit in December when the city twinkles with festive lights and Christmas market stalls line the streets. You can warm up with a hot chocolate, shop for locally made handicrafts, meet Santa’s reindeer and even ride a sleigh in the snow.

The city is also a cultural hotspot – and the so-called Paris of the north – thanks to its many galleries, museums and festivals that attract visitors from far and wide. Discover ancient Norse folklore and local fairy tales at Tromso’s unique Troll Museum, or learn more about the indigenous Sami culture at the Arctic University Museum of Norway. You can browse its impressive ethnographic exhibitions that span prehistoric finds to contemporary art.
