Sorrento is a beautiful coastal town that charms visitors with its good looks, great food and glorious weather, but its history and culture ensures there’s more to discover than just la dolce vita. Founded by the Greeks, Sorrento’s townscape is shaped by a rich mix of Roman, Medieval, Baroque and Neoclassical influences. In the centre of the town, you can shop for souvenirs, pottery and lacework before checking out the 11th-century basilica at Piazza Sant’Antonio. Its beautiful Baroque interior is complete with sculptures and ornate frescoes. Then on your way down to the Marina Grande for some seafood and a cocktail, don’t miss one of the original Greek city gates, an ancient archway that’s been standing proud since the 6th century BC.
