Nigeria flight FAQs

Flights from London to Abuja or Lagos in Nigeria take approximately six hours and 30 minutes.

We fly to Nigeria from London Heathrow, with direct flights to Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport and Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport.

Nigeria is a popular destination to visit during winter when it’s warm and dry, so prices may be higher from November to February.

Visit during the dry season, from November to February, to make the most of Lagos’ many beaches, which are lined with bars, restaurants and lively beach clubs. This coastal city’s nightlife and music scenes are world-renowned, so there’s plenty going on to keep you entertained all year round. It's dry and warm in Abuja over winter, too – and this city never sleeps, with exhibitions and festivals happening every month.

Your naira will go far in Nigeria wherever you travel, with great value options for hotels, food, drink and experiences throughout the country. Abuja and Lagos are cities of great contrast, with well-heeled inhabitants drawn by the tech, fashion and entertainment industries living the high life. You’ll find clusters of luxury hotels and international restaurants alongside Yoruba street-food stalls, lively markets and restaurants where you can pick up jollof rice and egusi soup for less than you’d expect.

It takes between 30 minutes and an hour to get from Lagos’ airport to the city centre, or around 40 minutes from Abuja’s airport to the city, depending on which mode of transport you choose. You can get there by bus or taxi, which you can book in advance.

Travelling around both Lagos and Abuja is easy by taxi. Just remember to negotiate the price before you set off and pay on arrival.

You can also hire a car with British Airways if you want to see more of what Nigeria has to offer. You’ll receive great benefits, with all mandatory charges included and 24-hour customer support, plus you’ll collect Avios points on every rental.

A diverse mix of cultures, Nigeria is home to over 250 ethnic groups, and some say over 500 languages. The result is a rich tapestry of traditions, music, food and festivals that provide a feast for the senses.

The creative scenes are buzzing, with Nigerian musicians and artists drawing visitors from across Africa and beyond, so there’s always something exciting to discover.

Then there’s the food. Bring your appetite and be prepared to try it all, from street food to fine dining. Immerse yourself in the hustle and bustle of the Alada Avenue night market in Lagos for an authentic experience, or go all-out in Abuja’s international restaurants.

You can book a hand baggage-only ticket or make the most of our generous baggage allowance. If you choose economy standard or one of our British Airways Holidays’ packages, each passenger can check in a bag weighing up to 23kg – in addition to a handbag, laptop case or other small bag. Families travelling in any cabin with younger children can also check in one car seat and one fully collapsible pushchair. Read more about baggage allowances for children.

If you’re flying in our business cabin, you can check in two bags weighing up to 32kg each. Read our baggage guide for full details.

Citizens of the UK and Ireland and EU passport holders may require a visa to visit Nigeria, depending on how long they stay. You can find out more about visa requirements for all the countries we fly to at the IATA Travel Centre.

Discover outstanding service from the moment you book. Fly with just hand baggage and you can carry two bags free of charge. Choose our checked baggage option and you can travel with hand baggage and a 23kg bag checked into the hold, plus enjoy free seat selection 24 hours before you fly. On board you’ll find HEPA-filtered air, quality on-board catering, and a warm, uniquely British welcome.

Simply relax and let us take care of you, every step of the way.
