Brisbane flight FAQs

You can fly from London to Brisbane via Sydney. A flight from London to Sydney Airport takes approximately 22 hours and 50 minutes.

November and December are great times to find cheaper flights and accommodation in Brisbane. Although it’s the Australian summer, it actually the city’s quietest season. This is due to the tropical climate, which can be hot and humid with average highs of 30°C. However, it’s also peak surf season in Queensland, so if you don’t mind the heat, it’s a great time of year to give it a try.

March is another good time of year to fly to Sydney. The weather is starting to cool, and you’ll be able to enjoy sunny days on the beaches and lots of outdoor activities, but with fewer visitors compared with January, and June and July.

A trip to Brisbane can be tailored to fit any budget, and there are lots of fantastic ways to enjoy the city for less.

Streets Beach is a free, lagoon-style pool and picnic area in the centrally located South Bank Parklands along Brisbane’s riverfront. Covering 17 hectares, it’s Australia's only inner-city man-made beach, and it’s surrounded by white sand and palm trees. The nearby garden oasis, Brisbane Botanic Gardens, is also open every day with free entry.

To cut the cost of travelling around the city, use the CityHopper, a free hop-on, hop-off ferry service that stops at the city’s main riverfront districts including South Bank, the CBD and New Farm. The ferries themselves, called KittyCats, feature wide panoramic windows offering exceptional views of the city’s skyscrapers and famous landmarks.

While the CBD is the place to find fine dining and upmarket bars, the Fortitude Valley district offers cheap eats and affordable cafes alongside the clubs and bars.

The quickest option to get from Brisbane Airport to the city centre is using the Airtrain, which takes around 20 minutes. There’s also a shuttle bus service available, which you can pre-book for door-to-door transfers.

The city itself has an extensive public transport system of buses, trains, trams, and ferries. The free CityHopper ferry operates between North Quay terminal in South Bank and Sydney Street wharf in New Farm, while the larger, double-decker CityCat ferries serve a wider network along the river.

You can also hire a car with British Airways if you want to see more of what Brisbane and the surrounding area has to offer. You’ll receive great benefits, with all mandatory charges included and 24-hour customer support, plus you’ll collect Avios points on every rental.

Australia’s third largest city has plenty to keep you busy. Take in panoramic views of Brisbane’s skyline at Kangaroo Point before abseiling 65ft down the vertical cliff face beneath you, or venture to the top of nearby Story Bridge and step out onto a narrow platform 165 feet above the traffic. Kayak down the Brisbane River or hire a water bike – a cross between a bicycle and a catamaran – and pedal your way along the city’s main waterway. Catch a cricket match at Brisbane’s premier sporting arena, The Gabba, where you’ll be able to cheer on the Queensland Bulls or Brisbane Heat T20 team. Once you’ve had your fill of the city, there’s a line-up of natural wonders to explore beyond Brisbane’s boundaries.
