You will want to spend lots of time on – or in – the water during your Mauritius holidays. Other water sports include stand up paddle boarding, wakeboarding, flyboarding and kayaking.

On land, you can hike to the prominent basalt peak of Le Morne Brabant, or lounge on one of Mauritius’ many white sand beaches. Like Brits, Mauritians also drive on the left, and the island is very navigable, even sharing the same road signs as the UK. Trek alongside the Galets River, search for curious indigenous pink pigeons or soar over verdant landscapes on a zipline.

The capital of Mauritius, Port Louis, offers a dash of culture. Follow the locals to the popular Central Market. For Mauritian glass souvenirs and other artwork, visit the Craft Market. If you seek shade, take refuge in the shade of banyan trees at Jardins de la Compagnie.

Where are the best places to stay in Mauritius?

Although the whole island of Mauritius can easily be explored by car, you will want to stay in a neighbourhood that resonates with you. Each island coast is distinct, and everyone has got a different opinion of which is 'best'.

To enjoy warmer weather, make your way to the west coast, which is protected from winds by the mountains. The clear and gentle waters also make this beach popular with families. Flic-en-Flac beach is the longest beach on the west coast, which caters to swimmers and snorkelers, too. On land, you can shop or dine in a local restaurant. Flic-en-Flac beach also offers a prime spot to watch a brilliant sunset.

For a touch of luxury and a bit more privacy, stay on the less-developed east coast. Spend a day on the ocean with an array of water sports on Beau Camp or simply kick back on the beautiful Belle Mare beach Soulliac and Mahebourg.
