The city

Milan

The lowdown

All eyes will be fixed on Milan this February when it hosts the 2026 Winter Olympics. February is a fine time to visit this fashionable city even if you’re not crazy about sport. Temperatures are chilly but bearable (an average of 3C to 10C), and you can still take a day trip to ski in the Alps. Take your pick from Monte Bianco (Mont Blanc, the highest in the Alps at 4,806 m), Monte Rosa (4,634 m) and Monte Cervino (Matterhorn, 4,478 m) – all within around a 2.5-hour drive.

Take in an authentic local experience, such as the Ambrosian Carnival, where street parades enlivened by masks and elaborate costumes take place. Plus, the tourist crowds have left, so you won’t have to queue so long for tickets to see the Last Supper. On a cold day, warm up with a relaxing treatment at the QC Termemilano. Go from 17:00 to to 20:00 to enjoy Aperitivo time, when you can lounge in your robe, fresh from the outdoor pools, and sample a glass of wine and some snacks.

Stay

If you are looking for urbane sophistication, step this way. The NEMI Milano is a design hotel set in a fast-evolving district a 15-minute walk to the centre of Milan. Here you can luxuriate in a swanky urban retreat complete with a garden suite and with access to the De Montel Thermal Spa across town.

Tenerife

The lowdown

The largest of the Canary Islands, Tenerife also attracts the greatest number of tourists. It’s not hard to lose the crowds though – just head north to a land of jagged mountains, plunging ravines, tiny villages, ruined farmhouses and charming little restaurants.

Despite being one of the island’s two coldest months, February still enjoys an average of eight hours of sunshine per day and it’s usually t-shirt weather. The capital, Santa Cruz, is home to a knockout carnival in February – reportedly, the biggest outside Rio de Janeiro.

If you’re wanting to push the boat out, the Ritz-Carlton Abama could be the answer. This iconic beauty of a resort offers rooms with unbeatable views of the Atlantic or Mount Teide, Michelin-starred dining and a private stretch of Abama’s sandy beach.

Orlando

The lowdown

February is a wise time to come to Orlando, when the theme park crowds that descend on the city over the Christmas period thin out significantly. Be warned that temperatures can drop a fair bit and can even reach freezing, though that’s a rarity.

Venture north and out to the Blue Spring State Park where you can watch the wondrous aquatic beasts that are manatees. Valentine’s Day can obviously get busier, so make sure you book a table in the restaurants. Key events in the theme park calendar include the tail end of Epcot's International Festival of the Arts, the Disney Princess Half Marathon, the ESPN sports complex hosting a fantastic tranche of all-star athletic events and Universal’s vibrant annual Mardi Gras.

Stay

The Grove Resort & Waterpark is a family-friendly resort mere minutes from Walt Disney World offering a relaxing hideaway near the theme parks. It’s surrounded by a lush conservation area and brings a multitude of facilities to the table including Flip Flop’s Family Fun Center, which boasts a state-of-the-art amusement arcade, prize centre and glow-in-the-dark indoor mini-golf course.

Cancun

The lowdown

February is a fine time to visit the popular resort town of Cancun sitting between Christmas and Spring Break crowds with sunny days and cooler evenings cutting through the humidity. The Caribbean offers clear waters devoid of seaweed which make snorkelling a treat.

Fun events in Cancun include Candlemas Day (Dia de Candelaria), Constitution Day (a national holiday typically celebrated with parades and festivities) and the LIV Golf Mayakoba Tournament. Just bear in mind that February is still seen as high season, so it’s best to prebook any activities on your agenda.

Stay

Beachfront by the Fives is an intimate adult-only enclave situated on a private stretch of the pure white sands of Xcalacoco Beach. This boutique hideaway offers easy access to the Blue Cenote and swim-up suites with stunning views of the Caribbean.

Switzerland

The lowdown

Sweeping alpine vistas, cosy lodges with crackling fires and mile after mile of pristine pistes – it’s not hard to see why Switzerland is an inviting and romantic destination come Valentine’s Day. In February the country is gradually creeping out of its winter blanket with subtle signs of spring in the air. Fun festivals include Basel’s Fasnacht, which offers three days of parades, music, seasonal food and confetti, White Turf with its surreal spectacle of horses racing across a frozen lake in St Moritz and the nine-day-long International Hot Air Balloon Festival in Chateau-d’Oex.

Stay

Perched at an altitude of 1,531 metres, the W Verbier in the popular ski resort of Verbier is a fine place to hang your hat, blending urban design with alpine touches. An extensive spa offers two pools, nine treatment rooms and a 24-hour FIT gym, while the stylish W Living Room hosts cutting-edge mixology to complete the picture.
