Small but mightily scenic
The island’s small size means you can see it all on a short holiday or take your time and stretch everything out over a blissfully long, sunny stay.
Sri Lanka, the pearl of the Indian Ocean, has pearls of wisdom to share: sunrises are worth waking early for, scenic journeys are even more stunning when you stop along the way, a king coconut is the perfect refresher, and, if you can, take your tea in the clouds. Whether you’re looking for characterful cities, colourful beaches, grand wilderness or sacred cultural sites, holidays to Sri Lanka can have it all.

Sri Lanka holiday FAQs
- Explore Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle, an area anchored by three UNESCO-listed ancient cities. Anuradhapura was the island’s first capital, built around a cutting from the Buddha’s tree of enlightenment before being abandoned to jungle overgrowth. It’s now reopened so you can admire the island’s oldest Buddhist temple and towering stupas. Polonnaruwa, the second capital, retains intricate relics including the rock-cut Buddha statues at Gal Vihara and remains of a royal palace. Meanwhile, mountain-backed Kandy is where you’ll find the famous Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. The triangle also covers Sigiriya, known for its ‘lion fortress’ soaring over the jungle, and Dambulla’s massive cave temple complex.
- Sri Lankan beaches are often defined by bath-warm waters, pearly sands, trees filled with tropical birds and soft surfs. Mirissa, with its crescent-shaped bay and blue whale sightings, and Unawatuna, with its turquoise waters favoured by sea turtles and Instagram-loved rope swings, are considered among the best beaches in Sri Lanka. Sunset walks on Hikkaduwa beach also stun with views of palm trees and stilt fishermen silhouetted against a blushing sky. Looking to surf? Take your board to Arugam Bay and make the most of the right hand point break.
- Take a break from the heat in Sri Lanka’s hill country. Across the island’s mountainous centre you’ll find mist-wrapped hills, waterfall-veiled valleys and landscapes shaped by tea fields. The air is cooler here, the towns quieter. By far the most famous thing to do is take the Kandy to Ella train, which passes cloud forests, mountain villages, valleys and fields that stretch right up to the train window. The journey is long and slow, all the better to savour the views, and seats on the right side (when departing from Kandy) are best. Book second class early to secure a reserved seat.
- See Sri Lanka’s cities. Colombo is the starting point for most Sri Lanka holidays. Hang around for maalu paan on the waterfront and stroll through Pettah Market before taking on the rest of the island. You’ll also want to see Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque’s red stripes, Gangaramaya Temple’s Buddhist statues and all of the zippy tuk tuks. For a different experience, set your sights on Galle. At the heart of this relaxed, coastal city is a UNESCO-listed 17th Century Dutch fort. Think more boutique shops, less busy markets, and bask on nearby beaches like Unawatuna.
You’re never far from a sandy beach or scenic sunset in Sri Lanka, whether you opt to stay in an energetic city or sleepy coastal town. Choose Colombo as a base for a great introduction to Sri Lankan culture, food and waterside walks. You’ll also be close to transport hubs, meaning you can easily branch out to see more of the island. If you’re looking for a wilder setting, Ambalantota offers tropical nature and quiet beaches. Bentota is another popular beach destination with excellent water sports on the southern coast. Alternatively, nearby Beruwala boasts a ‘Golden Mile’ beach and a lovely, laid-back atmosphere.
Peak season in Sri Lanka runs from December to April, with sunny days and minimal rainfall. This period is ideal for beach holidays, sightseeing and exploring the plantations and waterfalls of the Hill Country. Travel to Sri Lanka in October and November for great deals on accommodation.
