Sydney flight FAQs

Flights from London to Sydney take around 22 hours 50 minutes in total. The first flight of your journey to Singapore takes around 12 hours, and the second flight on to Sydney takes just under 11 hours.

Sydney is a popular destination in December and January, during peak Australian summertime. You might find that flights are cheapest if you travel during spring or autumn.

Sydney isn’t known to be especially budget friendly, but that doesn’t mean you need to break the bank. Backpackers make use of the city’s many hostels and there’s a range of hotels to match every budget.

Dining out is a great experience in Sydney but you don’t need to live it up for every meal – especially with so many great spots for picnics. Head to Observatory Hill Park for an al fresco lunch with glittering views over Sydney Harbour.

You can brush up on Australian history and culture for free at many of the city’s museums and galleries. There’s no entry fee to visit the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, the Rocks Discovery Museum or the Australian Design Centre, which has an ever-changing roster of exhibitions, workshops and events.

Sydney’s Kingsford Smith Airport is 15km from the city centre. You can hop on the regular Airport Link train from the arrivals terminal and reach central Sydney in just 13 minutes. There are plenty of taxis waiting at the airport and the journey takes around half an hour, or you can jump on the direct bus to Bondi Beach and take in the sights of the city on your way.

Getting around Sydney is easy thanks to its reliable public transport system. You can use ferries or water taxis to reach the various beaches and bays, and the network of trains, buses, the light railway and metro for seeing the city.

You can also hire a car with British Airways if you want to see more of what Sydney has to offer. You’ll receive great benefits, with all mandatory charges included and 24-hour customer support, plus you’ll collect Avios points on every rental.

Whether you’re staying put in New South Wales or passing through while touring Australia, Sydney is perfectly set up for a memorable break. This cosmopolitan city’s thriving food, culture and entertainment scenes play out to a backdrop of shiny skyscrapers, famous landmarks and, of course, world-renowned beaches.

City life aside, Sydney’s natural beauty and surrounding countryside mean you can reconnect with nature on your visit. Head out for a daytrip to the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, north of the city. You can hike through the bush, go kayaking and spot Aboriginal rock paintings.

The Blue Mountains are also easily accessible from Sydney. This UNESCO World Heritage area is full of eucalypt forests, lush rainforests, sandstone cliffs and waterfalls – and if you’re lucky, you may even spot some famous locals. Kangaroos, koalas, platypus and laughing kookaburra are all native to the area.

British passport holders must have a valid visa to travel to Australia. The Australian eVisitor visa is the best option for tourists. This applies to anyone who is visiting Australia on a short business trip or for personal travel/tourism. British nationals can stay in Australia for up to 90 days with an eVisitor visa.
