Fly to St. Petersburg and explore Russia’s historic window on the west. Despite being founded barely 300 years ago, St. Petersburg is one of Europe’s most spectacular historic cities, with a collection of palaces, theatres, churches and grand avenues that make many other European art capitals look rather modest.
Flights to St. Petersburg are also a good starting point for discovering the city’s little-known region. Just outside the city is Peterhof, Peter’s lavish summer palace overlooking the Baltic, while in the forests to the south is Gatchina, a sprawling castle built for one of Catherine the Great’s lovers. Wild Lake Ladoga almost touches St. Petersburg’s suburbs, its waters containing the monastery island of Valaam.
Flights from London take 3 hours 15 minutes to arrive in St. Petersburg. The city’s Pulkovo airport is located 11 miles from the city centre. It is connected to Petersburg’s metro by a bus service with a journey time of around 20 minutes.
British Airways flies from London Heathrow (LHR) to St. Petersburg Pulkovo Airport (LED). British Airways offers one daily morning flight to the city. Choose to fly with hand baggage only or pick a price that includes a 23kg checked baggage allowance and free seat selection 24 hours before you fly - both options include complimentary on-board drinks and snacks.
St. Petersburg’s Pulkovo Airport is connected to the city’s metro system by a 20-minute bus service to the Moskovskaya metro station, itself 7 stops from Nevsky Prospekt, St. Petersburg’s main street. While distances between many key sites are walkable, the St. Petersburg’s metro system five lines are easy to use and efficient.
Among the five cafés and restaurants at St. Petersburg’s Pulkovo airport, standouts include Siberian Crown, a beer restaurant serving local Russian brews and char-grilled shashlik kebabs, and Shokoladnica, a Russian café chain serving speciality coffees and hot chocolate. Inside the departure lounge, Lenianta sells a good range of duty free alcohol and tobacco products, plus international perfume and beauty brands, electrical goods and Russian delicacies such as caviar.
