Bag fees/exemptions & carry-on rules aligned with American Airlines
Our carry-on rules and checked bag fees and exemptions are now aligned. However, other baggage rules could be different. If your flight is operated by American, be sure to check aa.com.
Checked bag fees for tickets booked on/after April 23, 2014
Pay for your checked bags when you check in online or at the airport. All bag fees are per person, each way and are non-refundable.

- Required medical supplies or equipment. These items may also be carried on the aircraft as long as they meet size and weight restrictions. If medical equipment or supplies are in a larger bag with other non-essential items, normal baggage fees apply

Infants / partner flights / stopovers
Infant is allowed:
- 1 fully collapsible stroller or 1 child restraint device or car seat (no charge)
- If you're traveling outside the U.S., Puerto Rico or USVI with an infant in lap, your child is allowed 1 checked bag (checked bag fees apply - max 62 in/157 cm and 50 lbs/23 kg)
If you're traveling with one of our other partners, here's information about other airline baggage and other optional fees.
As long as you booked your flights together in one itinerary, we'll check your bags through to your destination. We'll also check your bags through on all of your US Airways flights.
If you have 2 or more tickets that you booked separately, you'll need to pick up your bag and re-check it with the next airline.
If you stop between flights for more than 24 hours, you'll be charged for bags for each of your flights.

Checking overweight or oversize bags?
Overweight
- Bags over 50 lbs/22 kg are overweight.
- We charge extra fees for bags from 51 - 70 lbs/23 - 32 kg and 71 - 100 lbs/33 - 45 kg.
Oversize
- Dimensions between 62 - 126 in/157 - 320 cm (height + width + length) are oversize.
- When you're trying to figure out if your bag is oversize, add the measurements for length, height and width together.

Carry-on bags
Carry-on allowance
You're allowed 1 carry-on bag and 1 personal item.
- Your carry-on bag can be up to 45 inches (22 x 14 x 9 in) or 115 centimeters (23 x 36 x 56 cm)
- Your personal item needs to be smaller than your carry-on item and must fit under the seat in front of you.
- Instead of a carry-on bag, you can bring on a soft-sided garment bag up to 51 inches.
Carry-on rules for US Airways Express
Not sure if you're on a US Airways Express flight? Please check your confirmation. If you're on a flight operated by Air Wisconsin, Mesa, Piedmont, PSA, Republic, SkyWest or Trans States, you're allowed to carry on 2 items:
- 1 personal item (such as a purse or laptop) in the cabin, and
- 1 small carry-on bag, which will be tagged, placed in the cargo bin and returned to you plane-side or on the loading bridge when you arrive
Exemptions
In addition to a personal item and carry-on bag, you can also bring a diaper bag and duty free items on your flight.
TSA carry-on restrictions

Baggage liability
Liability for loss, delay or damage to checked baggage is limited to $3,400 per ticketed passenger for travel entirely within the U.S.
When US Airways has exercised the ordinary standard of care, it shall not be liable for damage to or damage caused by fragile articles, liquids, or perishables, nor for the loss of, damage to, or delay in:
- Antiques / heirlooms / collectibles
- Blueprints
- Business samples / equipment / documents / irreplaceable items
- Currency
- Equipment
- Keys
- Natural fur products
- Optics
- Precious metals / stones and jewelry
- Sound reproduction equipment
- Artwork
- Books / manuscripts / publications
- Computer hardware, software, etc.
- Electronics
- Lifesaving medication
- Negotiable papers, securities, documents
- Photographic, cinematographic audio / video equipment
- Silverware
- Spirits
International baggage liability policy
For international travel (including the domestic portions of international flights) to which the Montreal Convention applies, US Airways' liability for loss, delays, or damage to baggage is limited to approximately $1,807 per passenger for checked and unchecked baggage.
Local airport/government regulations state that any baggage over 70 pounds is not accepted for travel from: MAN, LGW, GLA, LIS, BRU, LHR, DUB.
Baggage embargo
There is a seasonal baggage embargo for southbound passengers.

- Mexico City
- Santo Domingo
During the embargo, passengers are allowed to check only 2 bags - no excess baggage. Passengers may not check boxes. Normal 1st and 2nd checked bag fees apply.
Normal bag allowances for First Class, Dividend Miles Preferred, AAdvantage Platinum and Executive Platinum members, and oneworld Sapphire and Emerald passengers remain unchanged during the embargo. Non-rev passengers are allowed carry-on only (no checked bags).
Baggage embargo dates:
- Easter week (the Friday before Good Friday until the Wednesday after Easter)
- June 20 - September 1
- November 15 - January 13
