Arrive in Fort Lauderdale with British Airways and get acquainted with one of the most affluent cities on the Florida Gold Coast. Although less than an hour’s drive from Miami, in many ways Fort Lauderdale is a world away from the party capital. However, it’s just as easy to reach for British Airways travellers; just take a direct flight from London Gatwick.

You’ll travel by plane to Fort Lauderdale, but once you touch down, you’ll find that this attractive city is all about life on the water. Threaded by the Intracoastal Waterway, Fort Lauderdale calls itself the ‘Venice of America’ – a title that derives from its many canals, rather than any Canalettos. And where you find water, you’ll find waterfront bars, restaurants with boat parking and extravagant celebrity villas on the manicured ‘Millionaire’s Row’. Travel in style with British Airways and you'll arrive refreshed and ready to enjoy exploring the city by water taxi. Plus, our generous baggage allowance means you can shop Las Olas Boulevard and Sawgrass Mills and still have room for your snorkel mask (for the reef at Lauderdale-By-The-Sea) and sandals (for a casual night out at a tiki bar). Everything you need to know about flying to Fort Lauderale with British Airways

How long is the flight from London to Fort Lauderdale?

Flights to Fort Lauderdale take around nine hours and 20 minutes from London.

When is the best time to fly to Fort Lauderdale?

With 3,000 hours of sunshine a year, there’s really no bad time to fly to Fort Lauderdale. The city’s busy season is from October to April, when the clement weather makes it a popular place for affluent Americans to spend their winter (the locals call them ‘snowbirds’). During this time, expect sunshine for days and lovely warm temperatures. Younger crowds flock to Fort Lauderdale during Spring Break (March and April), so some hotels might fill up around this time. Though the summer brings slightly more unsettled weather, and occasional storms, you might also find higher prices in July, during school holidays.

Onward travel from Fort Lauderdale Airport

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) is 5km southwest of Downtown Fort Lauderdale. The best way into the city centre is by train – the Tri-Rail service takes just nine minutes. Alternatively, pick up the Broward County Transit bus from the Rental Car Center, Stop 7. Taxi arrangements can be made at the Transportation Podium outside the baggage claim area. For complete freedom and flexibility, book our car hire. Driving from the airport, it's 45 minutes to the centre of Miami and an hour and 45 minutes to Naples, Florida. Staying in the Fort Lauderdale area, you can get to the resorts at Boca Raton in 30 minutes, or West Palm Beach in an hour.

Should you fly into Fort Lauderdale or Miami?

It’s common to find significantly cheaper flights to Fort Lauderdale than flights to Miami – you just need to factor in an easy 45-minute transfer to the centre of ‘Vice City’ from the airport. If you’d rather stay in Fort Lauderdale, you’ll be in good company. The city has fantastic waterfront restaurants and bars. Fort Lauderdale also has a smaller airport to navigate, so it’s a very attractive proposition if you want a fuss-free journey.

Do I need a visa to travel to Fort Lauderdale?

If you are travelling on a British Passport, then you do not need a visa for leisure travel to Fort Lauderdale. Instead, you will need to apply for a visa waiver – known as an ESTA – at least 72 hours before you travel. You can apply for an ESTA online and the usual charge is around $14. Three long haul flight tips for Fort Lauderdale

Travelling can be tiring. Have a comfortable long haul flight and arrive in Fort Lauderdale feeling refreshed by following a few simple steps.

  • Wherever you travel, you can’t beat a good night’s sleep before your flight. Then, beat jet lag by living in your new time zone as soon as you can. Use our jet lag advisor for advice from our sleep expert on when to seek light, avoid light, and when to eat so you adjust as smoothly as possible.
  • Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol and caffeine to keep yourself fully hydrated throughout the flight. Limiting your alcohol and caffeine intake could also improve your sleep.
  • Flying can impact your blood circulation. Move around regularly during the flight and do some simple stretching exercises to keep blood flowing. Compression socks might be unflattering, but they can really help with circulation.

Free things to do

Glorious golden sands melt into Atlantic surf: you can’t beat the beach for a free thing to do in Fort Lauderdale. The city's beach is one among many on the ‘Gold Coast’ – head south and you’ve got Miami Beach, head north and there’s Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, Pompano Beach, Hilsboro Beach, Delray Beach. They just go on and on…

Things to do

Fort Lauderdale is a city where life is lived on the water. You might not be able to get on board a superyacht, but you can hop in a water taxi – friendly yellow boats that cruise along at tick-over speed between Shooters Waterfront and the shopping at Las Olas Boulevard. For a journey with a bit more style, step aboard the Jungle Queen, a traditional 1930s riverboat resplendent in white.

What to eat

Fort Lauderdale’s restaurants are nearly as plentiful as its pleasure craft. Spend an evening cracking crab claws al fresco or dripping hot butter all over a lobster (and a white tablecloth) in one of Las Olas Boulevard’s upmarket dining establishments. And if you want the ultimate crab dish, head to Naked Crab Seafood Kitchen & Cocktail Bar at B Ocean Resort Fort Lauderdale.
