For exploring further afield, there are regular trains and buses to destinations like Lecce, Ostuni and Gallipoli.

Don’t miss the striking Piazza Duomo, where the city’s 12th-century cathedral stands proudly. Then, amble through the attractive streets over to the port, where you’ll see the ancient Roman columns in all their glory. They’re thought to have been built to mark the end of the Via Appia, an ancient road that led all the way to Rome.

After a day’s sightseeing, swing by one of the many gelaterias and find a prime spot at the harbour to see the boats bobbing on the water as the sun sets.
