Best time to visit India
While India is a year-round destination, the country’s vast size means weather varies across the country, so the best time to visit depends on your itinerary.
- Peak season (December to March): Warm weather and little rain make it ideal for beach days, exploring India’s cities and visiting the temples.
- Shoulder season (April to May and October to November): Lower visitor numbers and cheaper stays, with warm, dry weather making this a great time for Rajasthan desert trips.
- Low season (June to September): India’s monsoon season brings rain to much of the country, but the Himalayas remain dry with ideal conditions for mountain hikes.

Visit the ‘Land of the Kings’
Rajasthan is home to a vast array of ancient forts, palaces and temples, including the 16th-century Amber Fort, as well as the historic cities of Jaipur, Udaipur and Jodhpur. In the Thar Desert, Jaisalmer has earned the nickname ‘Golden City’ because of its immense sandstone architecture.
Start an adventure
The Indian Himalayas offer high-altitude treks, mountain climbs and visits to scenic hill stations, including Ladakh. India is also home to some of the world’s best wildlife experiences, with Ranthambore National Park giving visitors the chance to spot tigers in their natural habitat.

December to March
Winter sees dry, sunny weather across much of India, with warm days and cool evenings. Southern coastal destinations, including Goa, enjoy temperatures of around 30 degrees. The mild conditions are good for wildlife spotting in the national parks, although snow in the mountains means hiking and trekking routes are often inaccessible.
April to May and Oct to Nov
April and May are the hottest months the year, with temperatures reaching up to 40 degrees. October and November are good for visiting Rajasthan’s desert with clear skies. Diwali, the Festival of Lights, is celebrated each year between mid-October and mid-November with spectacular firework displays.
June to September
Monsoon season brings daily rain across most of the country, along with warm and humid temperatures, particularly in the south. In the Himalayas, conditions remain dry and sunny. India celebrates Independence Day on 15 August, while festivals such as Vallam Kali, see traditional boat races held on Kerala’s backwaters.
