Plan your trip to Alicante
Why visit Alicante?
While Alicante may be one of Spain’s most popular seaside cities, it’s not just sun and sangria here.
Alongside Costa Blanca’s sandy beaches, you’ll find Baroque and Rococo architecture, tapas bars and coffee shops, and at its heart, a pretty marina. The waterfront drinking holes, shops and restaurants draw in the crowds, especially in the evening. If you prefer something quieter, there are quaint towns and hidden coves dotted along more than 200km of coastline.
If you want to get into nature, hiking trails wind through the surrounding hills, including routes up to Santa Bárbara Castle where you’ll find sweeping views across the city and sea. Round off the day with local food and drink, including sampling some of the region’s wines.

Alicante has a Mediterranean climate, with sun-soaked summers and mild temperatures during the rest of the year, so it’s a great choice in any season.
- Peak season (June to August): Hot, sunny weather and long days make summer the most popular time to visit. These months are ideal for beach holidays, whether you opt for Alicante’s quieter streets or Benidorm’s buzzy resorts.
- Shoulder season (April to May, September to October): Temperatures are pleasant in spring and autumn, but there are fewer crowds. It’s the perfect opportunity for swapping beach trips for sightseeing, coastal walks and relaxed dining.
- Low season (November to March): Milder conditions and fewer crowds offer a more relaxed atmosphere, with plenty of sunshine compared to much of northern Europe.

There are lots of ways to see Alicante on a budget. If you want to visit in the middle of summer, try staying in neighbouring towns like Torrevieja and travelling into the city. Spring and autumn trips are another good way to save on costs. Summer is Alicante’s most popular season, but the months either side of June to August still experience balmy weather. Lots of the hotels in Alicante offer all-inclusive options, so you can pay for your food and drink before you even arrive.
You can take a bus or a cab to Alicante’s city centre from the airport, which will take around 30 minutes. The bus makes several stops, so you can get off at the one closest to where you’re staying. Once you’re in the city, there are good public transport links to get you around during your stay.
You can also hire a car with British Airways if you want to get out of the city and see more of what mainland Spain has to offer. You’ll receive great benefits, with all mandatory charges included and 24-hour customer support, plus you’ll collect Avios points on every rental.
You can book a hand baggage-only ticket or make the most of our generous baggage allowance. If you choose economy standard or one of our British Airways Holidays’ packages, each passenger can check in a bag weighing up to 23kg, in addition to a hand bag, laptop case or other small bag. Families travelling in any cabin with younger children can also check in one car seat and one fully collapsible pushchair. Read more about baggage allowances for children.
If you’re flying in our business cabin, you can check in two bags weighing up to 32kg each. Read our baggage guide for full details.
Citizens of the UK and Ireland and EU passport holders do not need a visa to visit Spain. If you hold a passport from a country or territory outside of these areas, you may need to apply for a visa before you travel. You can find out more about visa requirements for all the countries we fly to at the IATA Travel Centre.
What to do in Alicante
Explore Alicante’s old town
Discover El Barrio, which is home to narrow streets, colourful façades and intimate bars. It’s a great place to enjoy some authentic tapas and soak up the area’s lively evening vibe.
Walk the Explanada de Espana
Follow all 600 metres of this palm-lined promenade along the waterfront, known for its distinctive mosaic tiles, cafés and shops. Along the way, stop in at architectural wonder Casa Carbonell, and open-air auditorium Auditorio Municipal de la Concha. The auditorium is used for festivals and live music, so check the line-up ahead of time to see what’s on.
Discover local food and markets
Order traditional dishes like paella and fresh seafood at dinner if you want to tuck into some authentic Spanish cuisine. If you’re staying somewhere with a kitchen, visit Mercado Central de Alicante or one of the other food markets to pick up regional produce and wines.
Visit nearby Benidorm
Don’t miss Benidorm. It’s one of Spain’s most famous resorts, and just a short journey from Alicante. As well as exploring its old town, you can stretch out on wide sandy beaches and enjoy the busy seafront and exciting nightlife scene. It’s an easy option for a day trip or a short overnight stay for a change of pace during your holiday.
Alicante and Benidorm enjoy a warm Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild winters. Summer temperatures often reach the high 20s to low 30s, while winter remains comfortable.
With plenty of sunshine throughout the year, both destinations are ideal for beach breaks in summer and relaxed city or coastal escapes in the cooler months.
June to August
Alicante gets its best weather during the summer. Expect hot, dry days with temperatures climbing into the high 20s and low 30s, and almost no rain. As things cool off, the long evenings are perfect for wandering the promenades, al fresco dinners and making the most of the nightlife.
September to November
The weather in Alicante stays warm well into October, making it ideal for late-season sunshine without the crowds. While the air temperature cools off, the sea remains warm, and there’s still plenty of sunshine. You may see a little more rain, particularly in October, but it usually doesn’t last for long.
March to May
Spring brings warmer days and longer hours of sunshine after the cooler winter months, with temperatures gradually rising into the low 20s. It’s a great time for exploring rather than heading to the beach and for making the most of the region before the summer crowds arrive.
