Flights to Tokyo
Welcome to the world’s largest city. Home to over 37 million people, Japan’s exhilarating capital is a place of true contrasts. Neon-lit entertainment districts surround ornamental gardens, Blade Runner-style 3D billboards live alongside Shinto shrines and futuristic robot cafes stand next to traditional tea houses. And it’s all overlooked by Mount Fuji, the snow-capped, natural skyscraper than towers over its man-made counterparts below.

Fly to Tokyo with British Airways and immerse yourself in the excitement of Shibuya Crossing, the world’s busiest pedestrian intersection.
For a unique perspective of the city, visit the observation deck of the Tokyo Skytree, where you can gaze down from 450 metres above street level. From that height, you’ll easily spot the Akihabara neighborhood, also known as Electric Town, famous for its dazzling multi-story arcades. In the distance you’ll also be able to see the Urayasu district, home to Tokyo Disneyland.
Take a moment to relax in the grounds of Tokyo’s Imperial Palace or enjoy a peaceful stroll through one of the city’s gardens, filled with bonsai and carp ponds. Don’t miss Senso-ji Temple in Asakusa, the oldest temple in the city, or the enchanting forest surrounding Meiji Shrine in Harajuku.
For a taste of traditional culture, be sure to catch a sumo wrestling match at the Ryōgoku Kokugikan stadium. April is a very popular time to visit Japan thanks to the cherry blossom that blooms across the country. Consider travelling outside of this period to find the best deals on flights and accommodation. The autumn months of October and November, when the temperature cools and the leaves turn red, are a wonderful time to travel..
There are plenty of ways to save some yen on accommodation and eating out in Tokyo.
Capsule hotels, which offer bed-sized spaces with communal facilities, can significantly reduce the cost of an overnight stay. Not only are they great value, but these futuristic lodgings are a unique Japanese experience in themselves. Street food and traditional bento boxes are great for cheap, tasty food on-the-go.
Most Shinto shrines are free to enter, along with parks and city gardens.
If you plan to travel around the country, a JR Pass offers unlimited rides on all Japan Rail trains across Japan and is a great way to explore the country on a budget.
Haneda International Airport is the airport closest to Tokyo’s city centre, with a taxi around 30 minutes away and the monorail and Keikyu train both taking approximately 15 minutes.
Once in the city, the Tokyo Metro system offers an efficient, safe and cost-effective way to travel around, while water buses connect the mainland with Tokyo Bay. The Shinkansen, more commonly known as the Bullet train, has lines running across the country and is the fastest way to travel between major cities.
You can also hire a car with British Airways if you want to get out of Tokyo and see more of what the surrounding area has to offer. You’ll receive great benefits, with all mandatory charges included and 24-hour customer support, plus you’ll collect Avios points on every rental.
Japan’s capital is a place that brings the future well and truly into the present.
The Borderless digital art museum in Azabudai Hills offers an immersive experience like no other, while the otherworldly Koukokuji Buddhist Temple is home to thousands of mesmerising LED Buddhas. But go further than Tokyo’s walls and you can glimpse a traditional way of life that still exists in the country’s small towns and villages.
Spend an evening at a countryside minshuku, a traditional Japanese bed–and–breakfast, or catch a ferry to Itsukushima Island. The home of the 12th-century Itsukushima shrine is also a UNESCO World Heritage site, built over the water.
Less than an hour from Tokyo is Mount Takao, a sacred site with hiking trails and majestic views of Mount Fuji.
