Earning tier points on flights
You can earn tier points when you fly with us and our oneworld® alliance partners to help you reach the next tier in The British Airways Club and unlock more benefits.
GBP 1 = 1 tier point
You'll earn 1 tier point for every GBP 1 of eligible spend on British Airways flights and eligible add-ons such as extra baggage.
"Eligible spend" means every GBP 1 spent on your fare and any carrier-imposed charges added by the airline* – which will all count towards your annual and lifetime tier point balances.
If you pay in another currency, the amount you’ve spent is converted to GBP using the IATA 5-day exchange rate that applied on the day of your purchase. We’ll use this converted amount to calculate your tier points.
This rate was introduced on 1 April 2025. Any flights taken before that date earned tier points based on the distance flown.
*You don’t earn tier points on non-airline taxes and fees such as airport charges and government taxes.
Extra tier points are here to stay
From 25 November 2025, all members of The British Airways Club automatically earn extra tier points on flights – and there's no need to register.
Simply book your flights as normal and fly after 25 November 2025 to receive the extra tier points.
| Cabin | Extra tier points, each-way |
|---|---|
| Euro Traveller | 75 |
| Club Europe | 175 |
| World Traveller | 150 |
| World Traveller Plus | 275 |
| Club World | 400 |
| First | 550 |
Don't worry if you've previously registered for the bonus tier point offer, you'll still receive bonus tier points for eligible flights and holidays taken before 25 November 2025.
After 25 November, you won't need to register anymore and extra tier points will automatically apply to any eligible bookings you've made since 30 December 2024 which are flown from 25 November onwards.
How extra tier points can help you reach the next tier
Club World, London Heathrow to New York JFK:
3 return flights = 7,440 tier points
Average return fare* is GBP 2,480.
+ 2,400 extra tier points
24% of your tier points for the year.
= 9,840 tier points
You've reached the Silver tier.
Club Europe, London Heathrow to Madrid:
12 return flights = 3,463 tier points
Average return fare* is GBP 289.
+ 4,200 extra tier points
55% of your tier points for the year.
= 7,663 tier points
You've reached the Silver tier.
*Average return fare is based on eligible spend, which is your fare and any carrier-imposed charges. Eligible spend is based on published and historical prices available on ba.com. All fares exclude any corporate or specialist fares.
More about earning tier points on flights
Earn 1 tier point per GBP 1 on upgrades, bags and seats
Next time you decide to treat yourself and upgrade your cabin, either online or at the airport, you’ll earn 1 tier point for each GBP 1 you spend on the upgrade.
If you pre-pay for a preferred seat on the plane or book an extra bag, you’ll also top-up your tier points.
Discounts, vouchers and Reward Flights
If you use Avios part payment, you'll still earn tier points based on the full eligible spend for your booking, before the discount is applied.
You don't earn tier points on Reward Flights. But you can earn tier points on any eligible add-ons to your Reward Flight, including pre-paying for a preferred seat, adding extra baggage or promotional upgrades.
If you use a discount or voucher code, you'll earn tier points based on the total eligible spend after the discount is applied.
How can I see how many tier points I'll earn on my flights?
Once you've made a booking, you can see how many tier points you'll earn in Manage My Booking, including extra tier points.
After you've flown, you can see the tier points you've earned, including extra tier points, on the statement in your account.
Tier points for British Airways flights are credited to your account up to three days after the flight or eligible add-on has been used. Air partners can take up to seven days to credit.
If after this time, your tier points still aren't showing, you can make a claim using our missing Avios and tier points form.
Exceptions
For flights with some of our partner airlines, you'll earn tier points based on your cabin, booking class and a percentage of the miles flown. For these types of flights, you can see the information in the 'Other airlines' section below or use our flight calculator to get an estimate of how many tier points you’ll earn.
For negotiated fares on British Airways-marketed flights booked through travel management companies in the UK*, you’ll earn tier points based on the equivalent fare that was available on BA.com at the time your booking was made, or higher**. For all other bookings made through travel agents or travel management companies and where the fare isn’t available or hasn’t been disclosed, you’ll earn tier points based on your cabin, booking class and a percentage of the miles flown.
For flights booked before 30 December 2024 for travel from 1 April 2025, that are marketed by British Airways, American Airlines or Iberia, tier points will be awarded based on a conversion of the old method. This means those bookings will earn proportionally the same number of tier points, or more, as you were quoted when you booked.
*British Airways is not in control of the price charged by the travel management company to the end customer, and therefore we're awarding tier points based on the price the customer would have paid on BA.com, or higher, for UK point of sale.
**For bookings made between 30 December 2024 and 30 June 2025 for travel after 1 April 2025, we'll award tier points based on whichever of the two awarding mechanisms is higher.
