Cancun flight FAQs

Flights from London to Cancun take approximately 10 hours and 30 minutes.

Cancun is a brilliant choice for affordable winter sun, but the cheapest flights are usually found in September and October. This is Mexico’s rainy, or hurricane season. But showers are typically short and temperatures remain high. September is also when Mexico’s Independence Day celebrations take place, with parades, festivals and parties across the country. Use our low fare finder to find the cheapest time to visit.

Cancun’s peak season is between December and April, so you can expect to save money on flights and accommodation if you travel outside of those months. And, thanks to Cancun’s warm, tropical climate, you can enjoy the city’s attractions all year round.

Cancun International Airport is around 20 minutes from the Hotel Zone, and the ADO bus is the cheapest way to get there. Taxis and shuttle services are widely available on arrival or can be booked in advance.

Local buses run frequently between the Hotel Zone and downtown, making them a convenient and affordable option for shopping and sightseeing. Taxis are also easy to find throughout the area.

You can also hire a car with British Airways if you want to get out and see more of what Cancun and Mexico has to offer. You’ll receive great benefits, with all mandatory charges included and 24-hour customer support, plus you’ll collect Avios points on every rental.

You can book a hand baggage-only ticket or make the most of our generous baggage allowance. If you choose economy standard or one of our British Airways Holidays’ packages, each passenger can check in a bag weighing up to 23kg, in addition to a hand bag, laptop case or other small bag. Families travelling in any cabin with younger children can also check in one car seat and one fully collapsible pushchair. Read more about baggage allowances for children.

If you’re flying in our business cabin, you can check in two bags weighing up to 32kg each. Read our baggage guide for full details.

Citizens of the UK and Ireland and EU passport holders can visit Mexico for up to 180 days without requiring a visa. You can find out more about visa requirements for all the countries we fly to at the IATA Travel Centre.

What to do in Cancun

What to do in Cancun

Discover Mayan ruins

The ancient Mayan capital of Chichen Itza, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, is around 200km from Cancun and home to ancient pyramids and temples. Alternatively, take a 90-minute drive to the coastal town of Tulum, where 13th-century ruins sit above some of the Yucatan’s best beaches.

Enjoy an island escape

Just off the coast of Cancun, you’ll find islands offering coral reefs, wildlife sanctuaries and pristine beaches. Cozumel, the largest, is a top destination for diving and snorkelling. Isla Mujeres is a popular day trip from Cancun, while Isla Contoy is a protected national park that’s ideal for nature lovers.

Swim in the cenotes

The Yucatan Peninsula is home to more than 3,000 cenotes, stunning natural sinkholes that range from open-air pools to underground caves. Cenote Azul, around 25km south of Cancun, is known for its striking turquoise waters, while others feature zip lines and diving platforms.

Cancun weather

Cancun’s tropical climate makes it a year-round destination. Temperatures hover around the mid-20s from November to April, rising above 30 degrees between May and October, when humidity is highest. Sunshine is constant, though the rainy season brings occasional afternoon showers.

Season by season

May – October

This is Mexico’s rainy season, with the hottest temperatures of the year. Rainfall peaks in August and September and can occasionally bring monsoons. However, attractions are generally much quieter and accommodation cheaper. September is also a lively time to visit, as Independence Day is celebrated nationwide with parties, parades and fireworks.

November – April

Mexico’s dry season is a perfect time to visit Cancun and the Mayan Riviera, with warm temperatures and minimal rainfall. Whale watching runs from January to March, when humpback, blue and grey whales migrate along the coast. The enchanting Day of the Dead festival, held from 31 October to 1 November, is celebrated with music and street parties.
