Why visit Tenerife?

Tenerife lines up golden beaches, dramatic volcanic landscapes and lively resorts for its visitors. As the largest island in the archipelago, its mix of relaxation, outdoor adventure and vibrant local culture brings people back again and again.

Unwind along the beaches of Costa Adeje and Playa de las Américas, or head for the more rugged part of the coast, dotted with traditional Canarian towns. If you’re visiting in the summer, a trip to the famous Siam Park is a good way to cool off. Inland you’ll find Teide National Park and Spain’s highest peak, Mount Teide. You can head up the mountain to see the striking volcanic scenery and take in the panoramic views across the island.

Tenerife is an affordable destination at any time of the year, but particularly if you travel outside the peak months of July and August. For the best deals on accommodation, look beyond the more popular resorts of Los Cristianos and the upscale hotels of Costa Adeje.

The island has many self-catering apartments, which are an excellent choice if you’re travelling with a group. Opt for a hostel to cut costs further or pitch a tent in one of Tenerife’s many official campsites.

For a truly wallet-friendly experience, have lunch at a guachinche – pop-up restaurants that appear in the garages and back gardens of local families, which typically serve simple, traditional dishes. The best place to find seasonal guachines is in the northern, wine-growing region of the island.

Tenerife South airport is a 15-minute drive from the Playa de las Americas resort and the neighbouring Costa Adeje. It takes around 45 minutes to reach the capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife in a taxi. Visitors can also pre-book an airport transfer through their resort.

Buses link the airport to Santa Cruz and Costa Adeje and run through the night. They also serve the main areas and attractions.

Tenerife also has bike routes that run all over the island, including Teide National Park. It’s easy to rent bicycles and mountain bikes from all the main towns and resorts.

You can also hire a car with British Airways if you want to see more of what Tenerife has to offer. You’ll receive great benefits, with all mandatory charges included and 24-hour customer support, plus you’ll collect Avios points on every rental.

You can book a hand baggage-only ticket or make the most of our generous baggage allowance. If you choose economy standard or one of our British Airways Holidays’ packages, each passenger can check in a bag weighing up to 23kg, in addition to a hand bag, laptop case or other small bag. Families travelling in any cabin with younger children can also check in one car seat and one fully collapsible pushchair. Read more about baggage allowances for children.

If you’re flying in our business cabin, you can check in two bags weighing up to 32kg each. Read our baggage guide for full details.

Citizens of the UK and Ireland and EU passport holders do not need a visa to visit Spain. If you hold a passport from a country or territory outside of these areas, you may need to apply for a visa before you travel. You can find out more about visa requirements for all the countries we fly to at the IATA Travel Centre.
