Belfast holiday FAQs
- Titanic Belfast is found right next to the very drawing offices and slipways where it was designed, built and launched. It’s more of an experience than a museum and tells the story of the liner’s conception through to the tragic 1912 maiden voyage through nine interactive galleries. Want more? Why not head to RMS Titanic’s little sister, SS Nomadic, which features a time-travel experience.
- Belfast’s Botanic Gardens includes a Victorian glasshouse with exotic plants and vast public gardens often used for concerts. Nearby, you’ll find the Ulster Museum which has benefited from a multi-million-pound redevelopment and houses exhibitions on anything from the Troubles and to natural sciences (it has the only dinosaur bones found on the island of Ireland).
- The imposing basalt columns that make up the Giant’s Causeway really do make a memorable day trip. About a 20-minute drive from here you’ll also find the ‘Dark Hedges’ – the garrison of beech trees that lovers of hit series Game of Thrones will recognise at once.
- Thrill seekers will love the high-rope course, climbing walls and zip wires at Colin Glen www.colinglen.org/product/skytrek/. The rope courses provide a thrill with a view, taking in the vast woodland around it. While here why not test your mettle with Black Bull Run or or archery?
- Crumlin Road Gaol only closed its doors as a working prison in 1996. For the 150 years before that it was the site of 17 executions and its inmates included women and children. Luckily, these days it’s an educational venue offering tours that include underground tunnels connected to the courthouse. The brave can book its four-hour ‘paranormal tour’ to try to catch sight of ghosts.
- Tour Northern Ireland’s oldest theatre, the Grand Opera House. This luscious venue once welcomed Charlie Chaplin, Luciano Pavarotti, and Darcey Bussell onto its stage. The tour allows you to explore backstage and get an understanding of the symbolism behind the architectural carvings inside, including gods, elephants and stars.
- There’s no better way than to soak in details than by taking a tour. Belfast has the lot from self-guided to guided tours on topics such as architecture, street art, industrial heritage and the Troubles .
- While murals were once used to mark territory in Belfast, in the Cathedral Quarter a new breed of street art has emerged thanks to international and Belfast-based artists. Look out for the annual arts festival Hit the North in spring.
- Belfast’s up-and-coming Linen Quarter hosts the Grand Central Hotel with its Observatory cocktail bar for sublime sipping. Back at ground level there’s the Crown Liquor Saloon with a riot of polychromatic tiles, gold ceilings and wood carvings. Bibliophiles among you might want to visit Linen Hall Library – it has a first edition of James Joyce's Ulysses.
- For all things quirky, try the Cultural Quarter’s Metropolitan Arts Centre . If you’re a foodie, then you’ll love the Market Quarter. Head to St George’s Market to sample the region’s tastes from belly-busting soda bread to Broughgammon Farm’s goat meat. Burn off the calories by walking to the nearby River Lagan to try out hydro biking.
- The Queen’s Quarter is where you’ll find Queens University and the Botanic Gardens. You’ll also be able to get up close to an Egyptian mummy at the Ulster Museum, take in an arthouse movie at QFT or listen to live music at the Empire Music Hall.
- The Gaeltacht Quarter is where you’re likely to hear Irish language, music, and culture. From here take the Divis Summit Trail on Divis Mountain for views over Belfast. Hike to Cave Hill Country Park and you’ll find the 19th Century Belfast Castle and McArt’s Fort.
