Montreal holidays
Montreal is a city for strolling, preferably with a poppy-seed-coated bagel or a bowl of gravy-doused poutine in hand. Wander this North American city known for its French flair to see basilicas filled with streaming light and cafes perched on cobblestones. You’ll likely stumble on a festival – there’s always something being celebrated – or a party like the Tam-Tams that take place in Mount Royal Park.

Discover Montreal’s many layers
As the gateway to holidays in Montreal, Quebec City and Mont Tremblant, you’ll be greeted by incredible natural beauty, unbelievable rugged scenery and an abundance of things to do and see.
Canada’s second biggest city has a penchant for theatricality. This is the birthplace of Cirque du Soleil, after all. Expect head-turning sights such as light shows on monuments and fireworks competitions in the sky. Mount Royal rises at the centre, watching over the city whirring with activity. There are, however, marvels even the mountain can’t see. The famous Underground City (aka RESO) buzzes beneath the streets – another layer of Montreal for you to explore. Book your holiday now. Montreal holiday FAQs
- Make your way up Mount Royal. Stop at the Kondiaronk Belvedere for a panoramic view of downtown – look for the 21-storey Leonard Cohen mural observing Crescent Street – before gliding along Beaver Lake on a white rowboat. Even when the weather’s frosty, there are plenty of outdoor things to do in Montreal: on the mountain, locals love to bundle up and skate across Beaver Lake’s frozen surface or zip down snowy slopes in toboggans.
- Step inside Notre-Dame Basilica of Montreal to look up at the neo-gothic church’s 7,000-pipe organ and vaulted ceiling freckled with gold-leaf motifs. Take a self-guided tour or attend a mass (in French). Alternatively, buy a ticket to AURA: an immersive experience that fills the basilica with projections resembling the likes of rustling trees and streaking stars. Watch for shadows moving over the nave and lights landing on ornate altar details.
- See an extravaganza at Cirque du Soleil’s big top. Head to Montreal’s Old Port for a show filled with stripes, swirls, twirls and somersaults that will make your eyes dart back and forth in disbelief. If you need to sit back after all that time spent on the edge of your seat at Cirque, settle down on a sky-blue deckchair at nearby Clock Tower Beach.
- Find a boatload of serenity at Bota Bota, a ferry-turned-floating-spa on the St Lawrence River. Aboard you’ll find a sauna with downtown views, a steam bath overlooking the city’s old port and portholes turned into plush lounge chairs. You’ll also find peace and quiet – silence is required everywhere apart from the gardens, where hushed discussion is okay, unless you’re visiting on a Thursday when the no-noise rules are relaxed.
- There are dozens of Montreal city attractions connected to the Underground City. When you want to escape the winter snow, or when you just want to see what an ‘underground city’ looks like, navigate this more-than-20-mile-long network connecting malls, metro stations, hotels, restaurants and more. Complete with a water fountain that sometimes looks like it might splash the ceiling, Complexe Desjardins shopping centre is a good place to start.
- Stay in the downtown area to be close to many of the best things to do in Montreal. Centre-ville (city centre) is packed with museums and shopping boulevards. You’ll also find the entertainment district Quartier des Spectacles, home to annual events like the Jazz Festival, here. See the Habs (aka the Montreal Canadien, the oldest professional ice hockey team in the world) play at the Bell Centre and shop for gooey maple syrup in the Underground City.
- Stay in Old Montreal for its cobbled lanes and ornate architecture. Top attractions include the Notre-Dame Basilica of Montreal and Old Port, where you can climb the Clock Tower and ride the Grande Roue de Montreal for soaring views of the city. Back on street level, sip espresso in a bank-turned-cafe and stroll around art galleries. Clock Tower Beach is another must-visit, especially in the summer when the sand is warm and fireworks sometimes fill the sky.
- If you want to peer at snow-draped mountains from gondolas and ski down scenic slopes, stay at Mont Tremblant outside of Montreal. With 102 trails, you’ll find ski holidays suitable for all levels. After days spent on the snow, sit down by glowing log fires with cups of mulled wine or mugs of hot chocolate. Visit Pedestrian Village’s restaurants and shops to sip cocktails on a terrace, dunk skewers into fondue and try maple taffy on snow.
