Historical Centre

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Naples’ Centro Storico holds a staggering array of historical treasures. Among the labyrinth of cobblestone streets and bustling squares, you’ll find frescoed chapels, maiolica-tiled cloisters and majestic domed churches. On a Naples weekend break, you might just have time to admire the beautiful facade of the Royal Palace and gaze up at the gleaming gold stuccowork of the Teatro San Carlo opera house. You could easily spend hours in the Naples National Archaeological Museum, examining ancient artefacts from nearby Pompeii and Herculaneum. For a spot of retail therapy, make your way along the meandering Via Toledo and take in the splendour of the Galleria Umberto I mall. You’ll spot traditional trattorias along the way, where you can sip Limoncello and savour a slice of authentic Neapolitan pizza.

Quartieri Spagnoli

While you’ll need to keep your wits about you here and a watchful eye on your belongings, the Quartieri Spagnoli offers a taste of true Neapolitan life. Laden scooters whizz through narrow streets festooned with washing lines, while residents chat from their balconies. Street vendors sell everything on their colourful stalls, from snacks to souvenirs, while excellent pizzerias and lively bars line the alleyways. Take a step back in time on a guided tour of the ancient underground tunnels and catacombs, set beneath the entire Historic Centre of Naples, and if you’re feeling a bit apprehensive, hire a local guide to tour the area.

Vomero

Perfect for when the bustling streets of downtown Naples become a bit much, Vomero is a leafy hilltop district offering spectacular views of the rest of the city. Ride the rattling funicular railway up the hill to descend on streets dotted with gelaterias, upmarket restaurants and fashionable boutiques. Witness some of the finest views across the Bay of Naples and brooding Mount Vesuvius from the star-shaped Castel Sant’Elmo, before wandering the lush grounds of the Parco della Floridiana. Then admire the exquisite frescoes and beautiful baroque architecture of the former monastery, Certosa di San Martino.

This small nautical island sits across the bridge from Santa Lucia, where bobbing boats and yachts are moored along the marina. Borgo Marinari is where locals come to eat fresh seafood, sip cocktails and chat well into the small hours. It is also home to the 12th-centrury fortress, Castel dell’Ovo, which was legendarily named by the Roman poet Virgil, who supposedly buried an egg under the foundations, which once broken will cause the fall of the castle and ominously, Naples itself. After exploring the fortress, enjoy a leisurely walk along the promenade, absorbing offshore views of Capri island.

Chiaia

Amble along the scenic shoreline to trendy Chiaia, an affluent neighbourhood which is associated with prestigious tailor shops, stylish boutiques and Italian Art Nouveau architecture. Pass through tranquil, leafy parks, browse contemporary art exhibitions and visit the 16th century Palazzo Cellamare. After purchasing artisan products at the food market, join the fashionably attired locals at one of the chic eateries or enotecas, where the wine flows freely.

Posillipo

From the pretty port of Mergellina, you can take the funicular up the hill to Posillipo, one of the wealthiest residential areas of Naples. Those who have a car can drive along the meandering coastal road, Via Posillipo, pausing at the Parco Virgiliano (Park of Remembrance) which overlooks the glittering Gulf of Naples. You’ll see Capri to the south, Naples and Vesuvius to the east and the picturesque Bay of Pozzuoli to the west. While Posillipo is primarily known for its private homes, it boasts an exceptional array of seafood restaurants, classy cocktail bars and a weekly outdoor market. Also worth visiting is the Pausilypon Archaeological Park, where you can explore an ancient amphitheatre and Roman villa used by Emperor Augustus. Otherwise, you can sign up for a glass-bottom boat tour to see the incredible submerged ruins at the Gaiola Underwater Park.
