Baltimore is thought to be less pricey than nearby Washington D.C. and you’ll find a variety of activities, hotels and restaurants to suit every kind of budget. While many museums charge a fee for entry, there’s much to see that’s free. The Baltimore Museum of Art doesn’t charge for entry and it’s well worth visiting for its extensive Matisse collection alone. The striking Washington Monument in the Mount Vernon neighbourhood is a must-see, and there’s no charge to browse its gallery – although there’s a small fee to climb all 227 steps of the tower for its far-reaching views.
You can also get around some of the more popular neighbourhoods and waterfront totally free of charge. The Charm City Circulator is a free downtown bus system with services running every 15 minutes.
Baltimore’s airport lies south of the city and is a 25-minute ride away by taxi. The airport connects to Downtown Baltimore via bus 17, which ferries passengers to a nearby stop for the Baltimore light rail system. Alternatively, a shuttle bus connects to the airport’s mainline railway station, and from there it’s a 10-minute train ride to Baltimore’s Penn Station.
Once you’re in Baltimore, the bus, light rail and metro services are reliable for local journeys, although many visitors opt to travel around by taxi or cabs ordered through ridesharing apps. You can also take the scenic route and travel by water taxi.
Baltimore's great food, good looks, rich history and buzzy nightlife set the scene for a memorable break. While there’s plenty to keep you entertained in the city, you're also perfectly positioned to discover more of what Maryland and the nearby estuary has to offer.
Chesapeake Bay’s attractive beaches, harbours and inns are just a road trip away for a slower pace of life and of course, more seafood. You can indulge in oysters, Maryland Blue Crab chowder and much more at one of the many seafood festivals held throughout the year. Also within two hours’ drive is the colonial-era port of Annapolis, as well as the Civil War battlefield at Gettysburg, where you can brush up on the region’s history.
