Australia’s autumn and winter run from March to August, which is when you’re likely to find the best deals. Melbourne is cooler than some Australian cities, but you’ll still find plenty to do if it’s cold outside. The SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium, Koorie Heritage Centre and Regent Theatre are all great indoor options. December and January are school holiday months, so this will affect prices.
December, January and February are the warmest months, but March also offers balmy temperatures. Summer sports are a big part of Melbourne’s social calendar, with the Gold Cup, Boxing Day Test and Australian Open all huge events. The atmospheric St Kilda Beach, colourful Brighton Beach and many others are all best enjoyed when the weather’s warm.
Whatever your budget, you’ll find a great range of options at all price points in Melbourne. Take your pick from comfy hostels and cabins, top-end boutique hotels and resorts or private rentals for a more personal touch. Melbourne’s multi-cultural vibe offers up a range of cuisines too, from street-food dishes like falafel and pork rolls, to fine dining options.
You can enjoy many of Melbourne’s outdoor attractions without going overboard. Take a leisurely stroll through the beautiful Royal Botanic Gardens, cycle alongside the scenic Yarra River, or check out Hosier Lane for some cool street art.
You can use the SkyBus, rideshares, taxis, public buses and hire cars to get from the airport to the city centre in around 30 to 45 minutes. Make the most of free tram rides within the city centre, a ferry from Southbank to Williamstown, or a water taxi to the sports precinct. There's an extensive network of bike paths to explore too.
You can also hire a car with British Airways if you want to get out of the city and see more of what Victoria has to offer. You’ll receive great benefits, with all mandatory charges included and 24-hour customer support, plus you’ll collect Avios points on every rental.
Apart from the golden beaches and surf breaks, the wide variety of parks and gardens in the city have earned Melbourne its nickname of the Garden State. For other outdoor adventures, how about a hot air balloon ride over local deserts and hills, or some skydiving? And, for 24 hours of adventure on the Great Ocean Road, you can go to Erskine Falls, part of the Great Otway National Park. It’s scenery all the way and a great place to rest and have lunch.
