Though this city of 800,000 residents has few major sites, places such as the neo-gothic Cathedral and the Mimara Museum, which has paintings by Goya, Degas and Renoir, are well worth exploring.
The Pedestrian-only Tkalčićeva Street is a good place for afternoon cafés and evening bars (where you’ll find the locals rarely dress down), while the local food is an interesting mishmash too. Zagreb’s position as a gateway to both central Europe and the Balkans means you’ll find schnitzel, goulash and char-grilled kebabs sharing space on menus. Zagreb holidays aren’t only good for city lovers, however. Two hours’ away is the Plitvice Lakes National Park – a forested network of pools and waterfalls, where bears, lynxes and wolves can be spotted in the wild. The Croatian coast’s beaches and islands are also just over two hours’ drive from the city.
