Grand Cayman

Boardwalk to a boat in Grand Cayman.
Overview

Wind down on Grand Cayman's beautiful white sandy beaches, but tear yourself away to discover what lies beyond them. Swim with stingrays in protected waters off Grand Cayman, then get a taste of colonial life at Pedro St James and among the back streets of the laid-back capital, George Town.

Background

High-rise hotels line Seven Mile Beach on the west coast of Grand Cayman, but there's still a British flavour to low-key capital George Town, which lies at its southern end. Here you'll find shopping malls filled with duty free bargains and the grand harbour is surrounded by traditional buildings.

First-time visit

Book a place on a boat trip to go snorkelling at Stingray City, a stretch of sandy seabed in Grand Cayman's North Sound where southern stingrays gather. Chill out on Grand Cayman's Seven Mile Beach with a good book and a rum punch. See green sea turtles raised from hatchlings at Boatswain's Beach adventure park in Grand Cayman's West Bay. Then go to Hell, the nearby village, to send a postcard home.

Return visit

Book a place on a boat trip to dive around the coral reefs which surround Grand Cayman. Find out more about local art and culture at the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands, in George Town. Go to Bodden Town to get a taste of what life was like in the 18th century at the restored Pedro St James great house set in lush Caribbean gardens. Find out more about tropical blooms at the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park in the East End of Grand Cayman. Then swing from a hammock at Rum Point on the Northside, reputed to be where the slushy mud slide cocktail was born.
