Frankfurt's financial district's glitzy skyline will wow you. Look
beyond its skyscrapers and you'll be surprised by
Sachsenhausen's cosy wine taverns and the half-timbered house fronts
of 16th-century Römerberg Square. Come again for the wealth of museums
lining Museumsufer (Museum Embankment) or the exclusive shops of fashion-minded
Goethestrasse.
Background
The River Main flows through Frankfurt from east to west. Just
north of it, in the city's cobble-stoned historic centre,
you'll find the red-brick Paulskirche church, where the foundations for
German democracy were laid in 1848. The city-centre Goethe House, where
Germany's number-one literary star was born is also worth a visit. Rest
tired feet in small cafes where, in the 1960s, students fiercely debated
revolutionary matters. The financial district sprawls westwards, while things
get cosier south of the river, where the narrow streets of traditional
Sachsenhausen nestle.
First-time visit
Start your day with a walk across Eiserner Steg Bridge for the best skyline
views. The rattling Ebbelwei Express tram takes you past the towering
Kaiserdom cathedral while you sip the local Ebbelwei apple wine.
Marvel at the meticulously restored Patrician house fronts of Römerberg
Square, then take the lift to the 54th floor of the ultra-modern Main
Tower. At night, choose between the hearty fare of
Sachsenhausen's quaint taverns and the gourmet dishes served at
the elegant restaurants near Frankfurt's grand Opera.
Return visit
Visit Museumsufer embankment, where the German Film Museum leads the
impressive line-up, or discover literary genius in the reconstructed rooms of
Goethe House. Schirn Kunsthalle is Frankfurt's leading
venue for innovative temporary exhibitions. The beautifully landscaped
Grüneburgpark is great for a relaxed stroll, while exotic plants
grow in the palm-filled Palmengarten next door. Explore the restaurant-lined
streets of bohemian Bornheim, or check out the experimental restaurants
further afield, such as in industrial Fechenheim.
