No trip to Key West would be complete without a trip to the Hemingway Home and Museum.
The legend
Renowned author Ernest Hemingway purchased the house in 1931 and lived there for over 10 years with his wife Pauline and two of his sons. Among the works he produced whilst living there were To Have or Have Not and For Whom the Bell Tolls, along with many short stories.
The house still contains some of Hemingway's original furniture and has been left more or less exactly as it was in his time.
The writer's retreat
The main focus of the house is, of course, the writing studio. Hemingway had it installed in one of the outbuildings and it remains as he used it. Dominated by a deer-head, the studio houses mementos he collected, including his Royal typewriter and Cuban cigar-maker's chair, still in place.
Cats
Another reason to visit the house is to meet the 60 cats living in the grounds. Some of them are direct descendents of Hemingway's very own poly-dactyl (or extra-toed) cats. They're all named after film stars - and you can spend hours hunting through the grounds trying to spot them.
