Take a trip through time and explore Delhi's historic monuments. Marvel at the
12th-century tower Qutb Minar and wander around the imposing Red Fort. But
there's plenty to see on a return visit too. Honour a world icon at the
National Gandhi Museum or see Delhi's savvy side at chic boutiques
in suburban Hauz Khas.
Background
Delhi continues to enthral visitors with its two distinct characters. Action-packed
Old Delhi is the city's ancient capital, with bustling streets
and monuments that are testimony to past empires. Here you'll find the huge
Jama Masjid mosque and the bustling Chandni Chowk market streets.
New Delhi's centrepiece, Connaught Circle, shows off the
fine city planning of colonial days, with the broad boulevard Rajpath linking
the Presidential estate with noble war memorial India Gate. Delhi's
best galleries and museums are located here. Admire the ancient bronzes at the
National Museum.
First-time visit
Weave through Old Delhi's crowded streets on a rickshaw, alongside
market traders, donkey carts and spluttering scooters. Explore the mammoth courtyard
of 17th-century Jama Masjid mosque and climb its towering minaret. You can
browse market stalls to pick up spices, silks and sweets, and gaze at the red
sandstone walls of the Red Fort, dating back to the peak of the Mughal
Empire. Admire the colonial buildings along Rajpath and discover centuries of
Indian history by taking a peak at the ancient sculptures and spears in the
National Museum.
Return visit
Pay homage to the philosophies of Mahatma Gandhi at the National Gandhi
Museum, which exhibits books and letters from the great man's life. Try
and catch the qawwali (devotional music) singers on Thursday nights at
Nizam-ud-Din's Shrine, honouring the Sufi saint.
India's passion for cricket is played out at Ferozshah Kotla
stadium. Relax in the peaceful gardens of lotus-shaped Baha'i Temple
in south Delhi, which is floodlit at night.
Indira Gandhi International Airport flies over 21 million passengers a year from its
four terminals, which are undergoing huge improvements. A taxi takes you 25km
northeast into the centre of New Delhi in half an hour.
For transit passengers, free buses run approximately every 30 minutes between
Terminal 1 (A, B and C) and Terminal 2 and take around 15 minutes. Visitors not in
transit follow a more circuitous route that takes approximately 25 minutes by bus or
taxi. It is a five-minute walk or bus ride between Terminals 1A, 1B and 1C.
Airport parking
Car parking is available at all terminals. A free transfer is available between
Terminal 2 and the car park.

Useful tips
Only passengers may enter the terminal buildings. Tickets are checked on entry and
bags X-rayed so don't leave it too late to check in. Bring reading matter
as queues are long and the selection of books and newspapers poor. Each item of hand
baggage must have a label, which needs to be stamped before passing final security
control. Indian rupees are not accepted at any shops after check-in and may only be
exchanged back on departure on presentation of a receipt from registered money
changers or ATM machines when the money was withdrawn.
