Experience Cape Town culture at the South African National Gallery then cool down
in lush Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. A trip to Robben Island will teach
you all about Apartheid's history. Come back to Cape Town to watch the
breathtaking sunset from a pristine beach and climb Table Mountain via Platteklip
Gorge.
Background
You can explore Cape Town city centre on foot, although a car is essential to get
anywhere else. See the South African National Gallery and nearby museums
before heading north to the V&A Waterfront shopping and entertainment
complex. Or drive towards Table Mountain to continue sightseeing by cable
car. Robben Island tells all about the Apartheid regime and Camps Bay
about the city's wealth with its mega villas, flashy crowd and upmarket
bars. Here you can also watch the sun sinking into the Atlantic Ocean as the
beautiful crowd sink into their comfortable chairs.
First-time visit
Jump on an Open-Top Bus tour to familiarise yourself with Cape Town city
centre. See the South African National Gallery for a cultural insight then
enjoy light entertainment and pavement bistros at the V&A Waterfront
complex. Visit historical Robben Island or head back to Tafelberg Road for a
cable-car trip to Table Mountain. Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens
introduce you to indigenous flora and Big Bay to some of the world's
best surfing waves.
Return visit
If you've already experienced Table Mountain by cable car, climb it via
Platteklip Gorge on your next visit. Or try a night walk to nearby
Lion's Head. Return in winter for strolls on deserted beaches,
whale watching and exquisite blooms at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. Find
new exhibitions at the South African National Gallery or see the gold
collection at the Gold of Africa Museum. Don't forget your surfboard
to catch that perfect wave each time you visit.
Cape Town International Airport flies seven million passengers a year from its two
terminals. A total makeover saw improved airport facilities for the 2010 Football
World Cup. This included an elevated road to ease access to the terminals, an
additional multi-storey car park and a brand-new Central Terminal Building (CTB),
catering for both international and domestic travellers.
The Domestic and International Terminals are one kilometre apart (about 10
minutes' walk).
Airport parking
There are shaded parking bays and a more expensive multi-storey car park (with CCTV
cameras) within easy reach of both terminals, with a roaming shuttle service for
those who require it. A valet service and lock-up garages are also available for an
extra fee. Pay stations are located outside the terminal buildings and accept both
cash and credit cards.

Useful tips
If your mobile phone does not work in South Africa, rent one from Vodashop Rentafone
in both Domestic and International Arrivals. The queues for immigration can be long,
so allow plenty of time for potential delays at the airport.
