The resort’s four swimming pools include a semi-Olympic pool with a swim-up bar and an adult-only pool that’s surrounded by cabanas. There’s also a separate kids’ pool and a wave pool in the The Pirates Island Water Park. Meanwhile, the Barcy Water Park has water slides and waterfalls. You can also head to the beach to sunbathe and swim in crystalline waters, or enjoy a variety of non-motorised water sports, such as snorkelling, kayaking and windsurfing.

The excellent sports facilities include a football pitch, a baseball field, a multi-sports court and a fully equipped fitness centre with separate studios for spinning and yoga. The 18-hole Lakes Barcelo Golf Course is also a major draw for golfers, set within a landscaped mangrove forest with 25 inland lakes. Complimentary green fees are included, although use of a golf cart is compulsory and subject to an additional charge.

Elsewhere, you’ll find a 24-hour casino (for over 18s), an escape room, a theatre and a shopping mall with over 40 shops. The expansive U-spa features an outdoor pool, sauna, stream room, hot tub and hydrotherapy circuit. It’s here that you can indulge in over 100 specialist spa treatments, while admiring spectacular Caribbean Sea views (treatments are available for a supplementary charge).

At the colourful kids’ club, children from 3 to 12 years old can play together in supervised indoor and outdoor areas. There’s a fenced-in playground outside, complete with slides, swings and climbing frames. Inside, there’s a ball pit, various play zones and video game consoles. Teenagers can spend time at dedicated Xzone teen nightclub with mocktails, and spend quality family time at the bowling alley, mini-golf course or theatre with live shows.

Barcelo Bavaro Palace has been recognised for embracing more sustainable practices. This includes a comprehensive recycling programme, motion sensor lighting and wind-powered heat extractors in resort.

The property has 11 restaurants that specialise in different cuisines. The eight a la carte restaurants serve seafood, steak, Japanese, Italian, Spanish, French and Mexican dishes. La Comedie, the French-themed restaurant, is only complimentary for those staying in Premium Level accommodation, but other guests can pay a supplement locally to dine here.

Two buffet-style restaurants serve international and local Caribbean fare for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There’s a 24-hour sports bar, where you can order bar snacks and drinks, and a wide choice of beach and pool bars around the property. Reservations are required at all a la carte restaurants.

A casual dress code applies to the casino, nightclub, buffet restaurants, Hoyo 19 Bar and Strikers Bar. This means that you can wear sandals, but beachwear is not permitted. In the a la carte restaurants, the formal dress code requires gentlemen to wear formal shorts or Bermuda shorts, a short or long-sleeved shirt and sandals or shoes.
