Themed on the legend of a lost African tribe, The Palace Of The Lost City is an unforgettable hotel in South Africa’s fun-packed Sun City resort. Regal architecture surrounded by botanical gardens, dotted with sculptures, streams and waterfalls really makes this hotel feel palatial – and elegant dining options, an Olympic-size pool and an indulgent spa enhance the vibe.
Sun City is a huge resort made up of four hotels and a fantastic collection of facilities. Located in north-east South Africa, it’s sat on the site of an extinct volcano with 62 acres of jungle, alongside the Pilanesberg National Park, home to Africa's Big Five animals, as well as giraffes and hippos. Sun City offers plenty of attractions, including a casino, two 18-hole golf courses, a vast water park, an adventure park and Sun Central – a shopping and restaurant hub. OR Tambo International Airport is 126 miles to the east, roughly two and a half hours by car.
Throughout the hotel, rich colours, stone carvings, frescoed ceilings and wildlife sculptures, including lions, kudus and birds solidify the grand atmosphere. This decor extends to the rooms, where animal print furnishings feature everywhere, from chairs to curtains and even to carpets, which depict wildlife scenes. Carved solid wooden furniture compliments the theme, while bathrooms are decked in marble and colourful tiles. Upgrading from a Luxury to a Superior Luxury room grants extra space, while Superior Luxury Family Rooms have the addition of a sofa bed. Junior Suites offer even more space, with an open-plan layout, and Superior Suites are the largest. Both have dedicated sleeping and living areas, with the latter offering a separate bedroom.

Within Sun City, you’ll find the Valley of Waves – a whopping water park with Africa’s only inland beach. It also offers water rides for thrill seekers, lazy rivers and a pool for those looking for something calmer, plus a spider web ‘sway bridge’ leading to hidden cave waterfalls with rare plants. There’s an additional water park, too, offering activities including wake boarding and parasailing. For adults, there’s also a casino with hundreds of slot machines and 40 table games.
Golfers are spoilt for choice with two impressive courses to choose from. The Lost City Golf Course covers just under 250 acres and takes the shape of the African continent. It’s joined by the Crocodile Lounge club house, providing light bites and refreshments, as well as a chipping green, driving range, practice bunker, putting green and pro shop. Located on the opposite end of Sun City, the Gary Player Golf Course, ranked among the best in the world, also has a restaurant and bar, halfway house at the ninth hole, chipping green, putting green and pro shop.
In addition to Sun City’s waterpark, the hotel has its own Olympic-size pool, surrounded by cushioned sun loungers, beside a pool bar.
For pampering inspired by local healing traditions, the hotel’s Royal Spa provides a host of treatments with products from Thalgo la Beaute Marine, Swiss Bellefontaine, iS Clinical and Davines. The menu ranges from massages and facials to energy healing, hydrotherapy and bathology treatments. Signature offerings include the Royal Spa Signature Massage with hot stones, Balinese and Indian head massages and a signature massage candle, and a Royal Signature Rejuvenating Shimmer Milk Hydrobath, to infuse the skin with vitamins and minerals. Refuel post-spa with a raw juice, smoothie, salad or light bite from the spa cafe.
Feast on a varied breakfast buffet at Crystal Court, where tables are laid out amongst banks of greenery, around an impressive elephant fountain. At The Grill Room, a wide range of meat dishes are found, from ostrich fillet to tomahawk steak. Pair your meal with a wine from the hotel’s extensive collection. When you’re soaking in the sun by the pool, The Palace Pool Deck offers refreshments and snacks, including wood-fired pizzas, and Tusk Bar & Lounge is a safari-themed cocktail bar, with faux elephant tusk archways.
