Located in the middle of the Vila Porto Mare Resort, Porto Mare is set in over three acres of subtropical gardens on Madeira's south coast, opposite the lido bathing complex. It offers access to five pools and restaurants, four bars, an ice cream parlour and a spa.
The resort is surrounded by subtropical gardens with over 500 plant species. Take in the sights and smells of the fruit trees, or discover the best kept secret, orchid corner – guided tours are available. The resort is around 100 metres from the lido promenade, lined with palm trees, restaurants and bars, and the lido bathing complex which has a saltwater pool and cliffside sundecks. Follow the promenade west to reach Formosa beach, around one and a half miles away. Funchal’s Old Town, or Zona Velha, is just under two and a half miles east, and is where you can catch a cable car to Monte and the botanical gardens, travelling above the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Laurissilva Forest. There’s also a handy bus stop outside of the hotel. Madeira Airport is 15 miles away.
Accommodation in this well-maintained property features red, orange and yellow colour schemes, set against white walls. Twin Land and Sea View rooms are comfortable in size, offering views of the subtropical landscape or sea. Opting for a Twin Superior Sea View room provides additional space, as does upgrading to a Junior Suite, which also enjoys a separate lounge and a kitchenette.

Five pools include two large outdoor pools, one suitable for children, and two indoor pools – one at the spa and the other at Eden Mar. Atlantida Restaurant is open for breakfast and dinner. Overlooking the pool and gardens, if offers a variety of international cuisine and show cooking. You can also enjoy breakfast and dinner at Alfama Restaurant, where a la carte Portuguese and Madeiran cuisine are on the menu – children's menus are available, too. Lunch is served at Il Basilico Madeira, where you can tuck into Italian flavours indoors or on the sunny terrace. Snacks and light bites are served at Varanda, next to the resort’s largest pool, and at Portofino Bar, where you’ll also find a daily happy hour in the evening. Champagne cocktails are among many of the menu items at Oceano Bar, where live music is also played on Thursdays.
