Dating back to 1804 this Relais and Chateaux property is steeped in history and tradition. With only 37 rooms each are individually decorated and all have flat screen TV’s as well as free Wi-Fi.

Within the Estate you can choose to eat at the gourmet Casa Velha dining room, the Palheiro golf clubhouse with its stunning views over the bay of Funchal or alternatively at the Casa De Cha situated in the Palheiro Gardens.

Relax and unwind in the Casa Velha spa, which offers a carefully selected list of Pevonia SPA treatments for holistic relaxation. Facilities also include a steam bath, sauna and a heated indoor swimming pool as well as the wonderful outdoor heated pool set in the gardens of the hotel.

• Casa Velha Restaurant - overlooking landscaped grounds and a manicured lawn, decorated in restful shades of peach with the style and comfort of country living, the breakfast offering is an impressive range from Continental dishes to a heartier cooked English-style meal. The evening setting is more formal for those wanting to enjoy a romantic, candlelit meal from a menu of finest cuisine, matched with a selection of Portuguese and international wines

• Palheiro Golf Clubhouse Restaurant - set under the 18th green, sitting high above Funchal with panoramic views of the bay, the mountains and the Atlantic Ocean the restaurant combines local culinary tastes with a southern European flavour. The atmosphere is calm and relaxed where golfers can enjoy a pre-round coffee, lunch from the à la carte menu or unwind over a post-round drink. Alternatively, enjoy an early dinner or an aperitif on the terrace. Open to golfers and non golfers

• The restaurant for Half Board customers is the Casa Velha - the others have a supplement.

Additional information

In response to Coronavirus (COVID-19) there will be thermal temperature screening procedures in place and you will be required to wear a face mask in all public areas, including outside. Breakfast will now be served a la carte, rather than as a buffet, and you will need to make reservations for the restaurant, spa, tennis court, gym and transport services in advance. The sauna and steam bath will remain closed until further notice.
