Overview

The Sandpiper is a luxury, family-run hotel, which boasts attractive colonial-style accommodation amidst tropical flora, a white sand beach and inviting waters. The intimate, boutique-style hotel is also home to a popular garden restaurant and beach bar.

Set along the upmarket west coast of Barbados, the hotel enjoys a tropical garden setting beside a beautiful ocean bay. It’s situated on the outskirts of Holetown, the second largest town on the island. Here you’ll discover plenty of high-end shops, restaurants and bars. Under half a mile away, you’ll find local stores and eateries, as well as the Limegrove luxury shopping centre. The acclaimed golf courses at Sandy Lane County Club are also just under two miles away. Bridgetown can reached in under seven miles, whilst Grantley Adams International Airport is further afield (nearly 17 miles away).

The beautifully appointed rooms and suites are spread across the two-storey buildings. They are spacious and sophisticated with neutral toned walls, tiled flooring and wicker furniture. Touches of classic Bajan colour and pattern are evident in the prints and soft furnishings. All rooms offer a private terrace or balcony with garden, pool or Caribbean Sea views. Standard amenities include a fridge, iPod docking station and safe, whilst bathrooms provide quality Ortigia toiletries. One- and two-bedroom suites feature a separate bedroom, kitchenette and living area, creating ample space for families and groups. Upgrade to a Tree Top Suite or Curlew Suite for a vast terrace area with sweeping oceanfront views, a wet bar, dining furniture and private plunge pool. Tree Top Suites also boast a large living area with a media centre, comprised of a TV and DVD player. Most other rooms are not equipped with TVs or tea trays, but these can be supplied on request.

Other facilities

The enticing beach is nestled in a sandy inlet, where small rock formations help to maintain its calm and clear waters. Tall coconut trees and casuarinas are dotted along the beachfront, providing natural beauty and ample shade. Relax beside the sea on plush loungers with umbrellas or unwind on the wooden sun terrace which overlooks the beach. You can stroll along interconnected beaches either way, or join in a range of complimentary, non-motorised water sports – including sailing, snorkelling and paddleboarding. Motorised water sports are also on offer for an additional charge, payable locally.

Take a break from the beach at one of two attractive swimming pools on the property. There’s a designer, slate lap pool and a round mosaic tiled pool – both are surrounded by pretty foliage and comfortable loungers. Alternatively, spend time in the peaceful tropical gardens, admiring the flowering orchids and bougainvillea or native trees and birdlife. Free garden tours are available on Thursdays.

The hotel features a small gym centre and two tennis courts, with complimentary tennis coaching on most days. Although there is no spa on site, free transfers are provided to the sister property, Coral Reef Club, which is renowned for its spa and salon facilities (supplementary treatment charges will apply).

The Sandpiper also caters to families, providing babysitting service (charges apply) and baby equipment at no additional fee. You can request cribs, highchairs, bed guards, play pens, sterilizers and much more, so that your little one feels right at home. Children who are five years old or younger can enjoy restaurant dining until 19:00, whilst children’s room service is available for later dinners. Chefs can also adapt dishes to suit younger babies. During high season, a special family programme is offered to children ages two to 12 years old. Activities vary from fun swimming lessons to sailing trips.

Dining information

Begin your day at The Restaurant with fresh juices, smoothies and a wide selection of fruit and cooked options. At lunchtime, visit Harold’s Beach Bar, which is situated at the very edge of the calm Caribbean Sea. Order refreshing rum and coconut mixers, and sample local favourites – such as flying fish sandwiches and Bajan fishcakes. If you find a coconut on the beach, the bar will even open it for you.

As the sun sets, The Restaurant promises a romantic atmosphere in the centre of lantern-lit gardens and koi ponds. This open-sided, all-day restaurant offers an eclectic dinner menu which changes five times weekly. Dishes are cooked with the freshest of local ingredients and beautifully presented. If you like seafood, try the fresh scallops, lobster or Caribbean shrimp – and don’t miss the mango souffle with sorbet for dessert. On Sunday evenings there is a barbecue dinner, which is accompanied by live entertainment.

Additional information

The dress code is elegant casual all year round. Shorts and torn jeans should not be worn in The Restaurant during the evening. Gentlemen are asked not to wear sleeveless shirts, vests, hats or caps in the restaurant. There is a special black tie (no tie) dress code on New Year’s Eve only.

The Bridgetown shuttle service has ceased completely. A shuttle service to Holetown is not required as it is within walking distance of the hotel (under half a mile away).
