Dating back to 1568, Villa d’Este began life as the summer residence of Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio before becoming a hotel in 1873. Today, its Renaissance character remains central to the experience, with antique-filled interiors, extensive private grounds and a collection of restaurants and bars adding to its grand sense of place. Four private villas offer another accommodation option.
Villa d’Este occupies a picturesque position on the shores of Lake Como, surrounded by a 10-hectare private park. Lake-facing windows and terraces make the most of the setting, with views stretching across the water towards the surrounding mountains.
Rooms and suites are spread across the Cardinal Building and Queen’s Pavilion, with views overlooking either the lake or park. Interiors stay true to the hotel’s heritage, pairing Renaissance-style furnishings and antique pieces with modern comforts. Opt for a lake-facing room or suite, where windows and terraces frame the water and surrounding mountains.

Dining information
Veranda is the hotel’s main restaurant, serving refined a la carte dining with views across the gardens and lake. During warmer weather, its terrace opens for lunch and dinner. The Grill takes a more informal approach, pairing local and Mediterranean dishes with garden dining beneath mature trees in summer. Seasonal Platano keeps things similarly relaxed, serving dinner indoors or on a terrace overlooking the lake and gardens.
For something lighter, the Sundeck serves lunch beside the pool, while Bar Canova is the spot for cocktails. Room service is also available for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Dining is a la carte, with only buffet breakfast in the restaurant or continental breakfast served in your room included in the room rate.
Additional information
Most areas of the hotel are wheelchair accessible, with predominantly flat grounds. The Grill Restaurant, pool area, tennis courts and upper section of the park are not wheelchair accessible.
