Overview

Unapologetically luxurious, Pestana Palace Lisboa Hotel National Monument is set in a former palace, which was once frequented by notable marquesses. This historic hotel is a member of The Leading Hotels of the World and features two pools, a spa and rooms exuding French palatial flair. The restaurant serves Portuguese cuisine in a ballroom, and the vintage bar offers cocktails, sandwiches and the iconic Pasteis de Nata. Plus, Lisbon’s top sights are nearby.

Situated in the quiet neighbourhood of Alto Santo Amaro, the hotel is within easy reach of the main sights. Head three miles to Belem, which is home to the ornate Jeronimos Monastery, Tower of Belem and the symbolic Monument of the Discoveries. A four and half mile journey will take you to São Jorge Castle for panoramic views over the pastel buildings. Stroll five miles to the postcard-pretty Alfama region. Wander its winding cobblestone lanes and admire tightly packed buildings adorned in shades of lemon and trademark azulejo tiles. Speaking of tiles, head to Miradouro de Santa Luzia, just five and a half miles away. This lookout point is decorated with royal blue tiles and striking bougainvillea, framing Alfama’s rust-hued rooftops. Lisbon’s Portela Airport is 7 miles away from the hotel.

Proudly residing in a 19th Century palace with a delicious mint façade, the hotel oozes rococo flair. Wrought iron gates open up to a grand staircase in the lobby and hallways decorated with damask patterned wallpapers and carpets. This elegant aesthetic ripples through the rooms with mahogany furniture, gold framed paintings and duck-egg blue furnishings. Modern comforts in the rooms include smart TVs, USB chargers for tablets and smart phones, and unlimited digital newspapers and magazines. The views also vary between the extensive palace gardens and the Tagus River.

Dining information

Situated in the palace’s former ballrooms, Valle Flor is the place to go for sophisticated flavours. Visit for the breakfast buffet and return for lunch and dinner, where Portuguese dishes reign supreme. Dine on seafood or try the chicken braised in Touriga Nacional wine. If you wish to try more local delicacies, opt for the tasting menu. Here the choices are as elegant as the gold interiors and frescoed ceilings. Sample the smoked salmon and seared swordfish, then finish off with the Rocha pear crumble.

Bar Allegro is also housed in a lavish setting with gold chandeliers and burgundy sofas. Enjoy light bites, like sandwiches and salads, as you lounge next to stained glass windows. Indulge in the caviar or simply sit back with the cucumber-infused Garden cocktail in hand. For a truly authentic taste, tuck into a Pasteis de Nata and wash it down with a glass of port.
