Sundowners are served on the roof, there’s a Michelin-starred restaurant, and avant-garde interiors that are straight out of the pages of a magazine.

Mr and Mrs Smith reviews

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this modernist hotel in Spain and unpacked their jamón ibérico and manchego, a full account of their city break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Ohla Eixample in Barcelona…

Barcelona could well be the best city in the world. It’s mini-break heaven, that’s undisputed; with the beach, the bars and the balmy climate – not to mention its iconic buildings and buzzing hipster centres of El Raval and El Born – it’s impossible to have a bad weekend here. And now there’s another reason to visit: a hip new kid on the city’s hotel scene. Step forward Ohla Eixample, so-called for the barrio it sits in, which was built as an extension (hence the name eixample, which means exactly that in Spanish) to the city, accommodating its expanding residential areas. It has a stand-out modernist facade and the interiors to match; Scandinavian-inspired simple lines, contemporary wooden features and plenty of concrete. The outdoor space has a similar urban edge, with more concrete instead of grass, though that’s not to say a clever use of plants has’t been employed – the huge windows in the restaurant frame an exterior jungle. From where we’re standing, Barcelona just keeps on getting better...

Dining information

Breakfast is a spread of typical Catalan produce, as well as cooked-to-order options, served in Michelin-star-holding Xerta, which also serves up acclaimed fine-dining fare for lunch and dinner. Locally caught seafood is a star of chef Fran López’s menu, including grilled octopus, oysters, squid, tuna and sea-bass, as well as shellfish and a daily catch. Japanese cuisine takes centre stage at Kintsugi, where traditional ingredients from Terres de l’Ebre are transformed into steamed prawn gyozas, Yasai-style tempura, uramaki sushi rolls with blue crab, and marinated mackerel with a glazed ginger saké.

Top Table:

For a rainforest-resembling setting, ask to be seated near the floor-to-ceiling windows and the huge trees they showcase.

Last Orders:

Breakfast is from 7am to 11am. Xerta and Kintsugi open for lunch between 1pm and 4pm, and dinner from 8pm and 11pm, Tuesday to Saturday. The Lobby Bar is open from 8am until 11pm; in summer, food is available on the roof terrace between 10.30am and 11pm.

Room Service:

Sharing plates of cheese and charcuterie, as well as comfort-food classics, can be dialled up to your room.

Hotel Bar:

There is a spacious Sky Bar up on the roof, serving salads, tapas, pastas, Catalan cheese boards and sandwiches, as well as oysters and caviar for the more patrician palate. The lounge bar serves a similar selection. There’s live music or a DJ on Thursday evenings.
