Seating changes and refunds

Changing your seat

Business woman with laptop and mobile phone in a hotel room.

You may change your seat at any time, and pay the difference in price when applicable. If you change your seat to one of a lower price, we will not refund the difference.

If you change the route of your flight after reserving a seat you must contact us to reassign your seat.

You cannot change your seat on flights which are marketed by another airline, and are operated by British Airways.

What happens when we change your seat?

We cannot guarantee that your seat is reserved because there may be an aircraft change for operational, safety or security reasons, even after you have boarded the aircraft.

If we have to change your seat, we will do our best to seat you in a suitable alternative. We will look to seat your group together in the first instance, and then your choice of window, middle or aisle seat, if possible. If you have paid for an exit row seat we will look to seat you in another exit row seat.

If we are unable to offer you a suitable alternative seat, you may apply for a refund.

When and how you can claim a refund

If your flight has been cancelled and already rebooked by BA within 48 hours of departure there is no need to apply for a refund for your seat as this will be processed automatically. If you do not receive any refund within three weeks of your flight being cancelled, please apply for a refund through the seat reservation refund webform.

You can claim a refund for reserved seats if:

  • There is an aircraft change and we are unable to seat you in a suitable alternative seat that you are happy with.
  • There is a flight disruption and you have to be moved to another flight, meaning that we are unable to seat you in a suitable alternative seat on your new flight that you are happy with.
  • You become unable to meet CAA safety requirements to sit in an exit row seat, and you contact us at least 48 hours before your flight.
  • You have paid for an upgrade and do not wish to pay the difference in order to reselect your seat in the alternative cabin.

You must apply for a refund on as refunds cannot be processed at the airport or on board.

We will only make a refund to the credit card used to pay for the seat reservation, unless otherwise stated.
