The breathtaking natural beauty of Engelberg is unforgettable. The panoramic views of Lake Lucerne from the peak of Titlis Mountain are stunning. Engelberg has been popular with British vistors for over a hundred years, and grand Victorian architecture remains a feature of the town. This glacier ski resort offers a nice variety of terrain for all abilities. Expert skiers and snowboarders should hire a guide and enjoy the excellent off-piste snow. There is plenty to do off the slopes, too. The town's Igloo bar and hotel gives you the chance to spend a night in an ice structure. Après ski bars in Engelberg have a vibrant and friendly atmosphere, whilst dining here can range from cosy mountain hut venues to the finest haute cuisine. With Zurich and Basel so close, Engelberg is perfect for short skiing breaks or much longer stays.
Ski and snowboard lessons are offered by Engelberg Titlis Ski School and several other private schools. Beginners can progress from here onto either the Gerschnialp area below Titlis or the Brunni area on the opposite side of the valley. Both offer gentle blue pistes that are perfect for beginners to gain confidence on.
There is an excellent selection of red runs from Jochstock that can take confident intermediates right into Engelberg town. The fast cruising in higher parts of Titlis is accompanied by beautiful views of Lake Lucerne and Engelberg. The Jochpass Terrain Park on the Titlis glacier has a huge quarter-pipe, kickers and rails. You can develop your skills easily thanks to the varying degrees of difficulty.
The beautiful, 2000 metre, Galtiberg run starts at glacial Klein Titlis and ends among mountain streams and trees at Rohr. The testing Kanonenrohr run is also very exhilarating. There is a demanding 1000-metre drop on the Laub that is enough to test even the most accomplished.
The Brunni slopes are often sunny, and are reached by a cable car and chair lift. Childcare facilities are good in Engelberg. Englelberg-Titlis Ski School operates a non-ski kindergarten for children aged 2 and older. There are also children's lessons for ages 3 and above.
The glacial areas atop Titlis and Klein Titlis afford beautiful views across this picturesque valley. Although there is not a huge amount of terrain at high altitude, the peak-to-valley skiing opportunities are excellent, offering 1000 and 2000 metre descents.
The Titlis glacier area remains open for skiing and snowboarding all year. The journey up in the Rotair offers beautiful scenery in a rare revolving cable car that offers a full panoramic view at up to 3020 metres.
Much of Engelberg's dining is based in hotels but there is plenty of choice. Establishments in town such as Maro and Restaurant Spannort offer good local cuisine. A handful of bars in Engelberg offer a vibrant night out. Yucatan, in the ground floor of the Bellevue Hotel, is loud and fun from late afternoon until the early hours. Spindle and Casino are both popular with a young crowd, whilst the English pub Dream Life is worth a visit, too.
