Punta Cana

Boat in the sea in Punta Cana.
Overview

A paradise of sugar white-sand beaches, this tip of the Dominican Republic is dotted with palm trees swaying against the sparkling blue Atlantic Ocean. Snorkel above colourful coral reefs or go horseback riding through coconut groves. Make a return visit to Punta Cana to play 18 holes on world-class golf courses or sip rum drinks by the beach.

Background

Punta Cana sits on the easternmost tip of the Dominican Republic, often called the “Coconut Coast” for its abundance of coconut palms. Most resorts cluster along the 32km (20 miles) of wide sandy beaches, giving way to clear water and vibrant coral reefs. You’ll find more secluded resorts and beaches in Bávaro, a few miles north. In town, Plaza Bávaro has a good selection of boutiques, gift and souvenir shops.

First-time visit

Find a spot on the beach under a shady palm tree, and spend a few hours relaxing in paradise. The clear water beckons with plenty of swimming, diving and snorkelling opportunities. Back on dry land, get active with a game of volleyball or football on the sand, or ride horses through coconut groves. The resorts serve up plates of freshwater crab under gazebos on the beach.

Return visit

With its 14 ocean-view holes, La Cana Golf Course is the place to land that hole-in-one in style. If you’re bringing the kids with you, take them just north of Punta Cana to Bávaro’s Manati Park. Here you can go swimming with the dolphins, or watch traditional Dominican Republic tribal dances at the amusement park’s Taino Village. Toast a blushing sunset with rum cocktails, then dance at one of the resort hotels’ beachside clubs.
