Get your bearings on Newcastle's Quayside, taking in the iconic bridges
that straddle the River Tyne. Then explore Grainger Town's
elegant 19th-century shopping streets and the Norman Castle Keep. As the sun
sets, tuck into a world of cuisines, catch some live music at The Sage Gateshead
and party back on the Quayside.
Background
The mighty River Tyne was once home to the coal industry and shipbuilding, and
Newcastle's iconic bridges stand testament to the city's thriving
industrial past. The bridges connect Newcastle to Gateshead on the south side
of the river, which attracts visitors for shopping and cultural visits. Walk along
the Quayside, now the main nightlife area, to get a sense of the
city's industrial past. Away from the water, Grainger
Town's broad streets buzz with boutiques, bars, a busy market and
several of the city's museums.
First-time visit
Walk along the riverbank beneath the city's iconic Tyne Bridge, a
steel deck suspension bridge completed in 1928. Cross the River Tyne to
Gateshead where you can immerse yourself in modern art exhibitions at the
BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art or high-street shopping at the massive
MetroCentre. Back in Newcastle's city centre, stop to shop in
Grainger Town's boutiques. Or take a tour of St
Nicholas' Cathedral, England's most northerly cathedral,
and the Norman Castle Keep, built to defend the city in the 12th century.
When you're hungry, choose from Newcastle's worldwide range of
city centre eateries or spoil yourself at a fine-dining restaurant in
Jesmond. Still want more? Book classical concert tickets for The Sage
Gateshead or head to Bigg Market's buzzing bars.
Return visit
Discover Newcastle's medieval past at 13th-century Blackfriars, a
renovated former monastery that's now home to craft shops. Hop on a bus to
Jesmond Dene, a pretty park with nature trails winding through its hidden
landscape. Or travel to the excavated fort of Segedunum at Wallsend to
relive the area's Roman heritage. Discover more at Great North Museum:
Hancock, a treasure trove of ancient artefacts, Egyptian mummies and
dinosaur remains. Look out for local art at the Biscuit Factory or take in
the watercolours at the Laing Art Gallery.
